Slymoose Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Hello everyone! New to the forum! I'm upgrading my gear from a Shimano R 2000 and a no name rod from wally world. I'm wanting to be into my rod and reel at under $200 I want a general use rod and reel, i don't fish enough to warrant several different combos for specific types of fishing/lures. I'm looking at a Pflueger President 30 series and a St. Croix Mojo 6'8" MXF. roughly $175 for the combo. I'll be using 8-10lbs. test line and like I said various lures in the mid to small size range. Would this be a good setup? Or let me know what you'd recommend! (Sorry for grammar mistakes, I'm used to a phone that autocorrects lol) Quote
kschultz76 Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 The President is a good reel to start with. If you're interested in a St Croix rod go visit their Bargain Room on their website and look at the Rage. Made with their SCIII graphite, same material as the Avid, that will give you better feel/sensitivity. And they're selling them for $99 so will cost you less then a retail Mojo for a better blank. If you're fishing all single hook baits like soft plastics that 6'8" M/XF is awesome, and the Rage series has that model. However the only treble hooks I'd personally throw with it are top water and Jerkbait and only with mono for some shock absorption. For a more versatile rod that will handle a lot stick to their 7'1' Rage M/F spinning model. I would also suggest that you look for a good deal on a clearance Stradic FJ 2500 as they're being replaced. At one point Cabelas had them for $125. But if you find a good deal on a Stradic and get the Rage you've got a heck of a combo in your budget. Other good reels in your budget are the Shimano Symetre and the Daiwa Lexa, I've not used them but read good feedback from other users. Quote
Allen Der Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 I'd spend a little more for the Pflueger Supreme 30 (the lighter weight is worth it). I think a 6'6 MF or 7' MF is a better all around rod option Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 7, 2015 Super User Posted July 7, 2015 I like your choice of reels. I can't seem to work up any enthusiasm for Mojo rods. Never fished one, just handled them in store. I'd prefer an *** Black....in a MF or a Fenwick HMG....in a ML-F because of their lure weight ranges. I prefer a casting rod for anything these rods can't handle. EDIT: That Rage sounds like another very good deal. No local stores carry them...not even Cabela's (somewhat of a drive)....so I haven't seen one. Quote
d-camarena Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Do they still put those flimsy guides on the ***? Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted July 8, 2015 Super User Posted July 8, 2015 I would go with a M/F instead of the extra fast for an all around rod. The extra fast blanks are a bit more specialized for finesse single hook applications, where a fast action rod will give you better all around performance. The Mojo's are good rods, but I'd probably take advantage of the discount on the Rage, as it's an upgraded blank. Quote
fisherrw Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 I'd get a shimano saros or symmetry and a phenix maxim 1 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted July 8, 2015 Super User Posted July 8, 2015 Welcome aboard! Fine suggestions, but keep your options open and even try to get hands-on with both rod/reel in the store before you buy. General use would suggest a MH rod, plenty in that price range. Personally not a fan of the Mojo rods, but plenty love them. I feel they're too tip-heavy for my liking... 1 Quote
Joe H. Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Shimano symetre 3000/ dobyns fury 7' medium would be a neat combo for around $200. 1 Quote
