HeartlandBassin Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 depends on the crankbait, for squarebills you could get away with using a 7.1:1 as long as you arent reeling very fast. but i would use a 6 to 1 for all around cranking. a 7 would be to fast for anything diving more than 6 feet. Quote
kikstand454 Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 It's not so much a speed issue, jitterbug, its a torque issue. Deep diving cranks.... 15+' .... Put alot of torque on you and your gear. Made even worse by dragging/ bouncing it off cover. It's kind of like a bike. Can you make it up that hill on a no gear kids bike? Of course.....but you're gonna work twice as hard for the same result. The same hill on a ten speed, you can gear down and make the trip easier on yourself. Same concept. 1 Quote

I don't crank anything super deep, with 15-16 feet being towards my max, but I see no problem with using a 7.1:1. It doesn't mess with the baits action, and I haven't been worn out from throwing them yet. Quote

You can slow down easier than you can speed up and because of that I use a 6.4:1 on almost all my cranking except for deep divers over 15' and for that I have a 5.1:1 but very seldom use it. So if you are using cranks that dive from 0' down to 6', a 7.1:1 is fine and as I said, I will often use it myself when I need to burn a square bill or shallow crank. Quote

Super User Raul Posted July 7, 2015 Super User Posted July 7, 2015 It depends on the crankbait, not exactly the type but on the crankbait itself, most lipless cranks won´t suffer any alteration but lipped cranks are touchier and some simply refuse to run straight ( they roll on their side ) so you´ll have to experiment. You keep hearing 5 ish for cranking because all lipped cranks will run true. Besides, trying to reel in with such high gear ratio is like trying to reel in a bucket. 2 Quote

IAY Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 I like fast gear ratio as well. Crankbaits are reaction baits, and I can cover a lot more areas faster and get more reaction bites with faster ratio. I don't recommend it when you get tired since it is a lot of work. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted July 7, 2015 Super User Posted July 7, 2015 I have a high speed zillion. I tried it for deep cranks and did not care for it. On the other hand, it is great for topwater and shallow cranks. Also, I keep telling myself to reel slower but before I know it I am reeling it faster than I want too. I have been using a Curado with a 6.x ratio and a Calcutta with a 5.x ratio. I have a slower speed reel on my radar for deep cranks but it will be next years purchase. Quote

Big lipped deep divers, supersized squarebills and big lipped supersized deepdivers will strain your resolve. Squarebills and medium divers simply don't have the water resistance and are better for burning with high ratio. Quote

If that had been in the first post, this thread would've been done on the first response. 7.1 is perfect for anything less than 10ft deep. IMO. Little squarebills and traps...things like that. No problem. You have no need to worry about beefier gear ratios until you start throwing 6xds in 18fow. Quote
