livetofish28 Posted July 5, 2015 Posted July 5, 2015 So a couple months back during a tourney my 1989 Yamaha blew up. Now that we are ready to repower were looking at our options. My local marina is an Evinrude and Mercury dealer and has been really been talking about the Etec 150 HO and hardly mentioned the Pro XS. Ive heard a lot of bad stories about the Etec but I don't know. Do any of you guys own one? pro's? Cons? any input would be great. Tight lines Andrew Quote
Super User Further North Posted July 9, 2015 Super User Posted July 9, 2015 E-Tecs had some troubles when they first came out...not so much any more. It's hard to buy a bad motor these days, unless you are unlucky enough to get the one bad one they all make from time to time. I would have no problem buying any make new motors these days. Going with what you can get serviced near by is as good a reason as any to pick a motor. ...if my Suzuki DF140 ever craps out I'd probably go to a Yamaha F150 because the best dealer in our areas sells them and that motor is excellent. I'd have no problem with a Merc, Evinrude or another Suzuki either. Quote
Logan S Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 I re-powered with a new ETEC 200 when my Ficht blew up. It's been great so far, would highly recommend. I also agree with the idea that you can't really buy a bad motor these days. If your shop is giving you a good deal on the ETEC I'd say that's a smart choice. One interesting thing about the motor, it's pretty small for it's HP rating. Which is kind of nice...My co-anglers never seem to smack it with their baits accidentally like they would with the Ficht. I can also clearly see over it if I need to look behind me while running. Some of the guys I fished with in my club thought it was a 150. Not something I would base a decision on, but it's a nice bonus. Quote

I have that same deal with my motor - it's relatively small even compared t0 a lot of modern motors and it's tiny compared to the early 90s Johnson 150 I had on my Lund Pro-V. It's easy to cast around and it's easy to walk a big pike or musky around the motor if they decide that's where they want to go. 1 Quote
