Brnnoser6983 Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 First I feel that I should warn you. I am not mechanically inclined.... at all.. so bare with me. I have a 1998 9.9 4 stroke Johnson kicker for my 14 aluminum boat. Last summer the engine ran perfectly. I pull once and it would fire right up. The summer at the beginning the season it ran great, again one pull start. As last month I started to have problems. I would throttle up and it start to kill. If I backed off it would be fine. But now I am getting nothing it won't start. I replaced the plugs, and it still seems as if it is flooded. I have compression add far as I can tell. Any suggestions. Oh I have checked the obvious. Safety kill switch, it's primed, fuel is getting from tank to engine Quote
Brnnoser6983 Posted July 3, 2015 Author Posted July 3, 2015 Hum I looked into this a little more, and it was suggested maybe the carb is gummed up. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted July 3, 2015 Super User Posted July 3, 2015 About the fuel, was it last year's gas, or fresh fuel? If last year's, was it treated with Stabil, Startron, or some type of fuel stabilizer prior to storage, or better yet, when you last got fuel? I have a lawn edger with a Briggs and Stratton engine. It will not run on last years fuel. It will not start, period, until the fuel tank is emptied and filled with fresh fuel. Once it has new gasoline, it will start with one pull. All the other equipment, lawn mowers, generator, weed whacker, chain saw, etc., will start on last years gas. I now treat all the gasoline I buy for all the power equipment including my boat with stabil. I put the recommended amount of fuel treatment in all the fuel containers and the boat when I fill them. No more problems. Old fuel can cause all sorts of problems. Not starting, not running properly, gumming up carburetors, injectors, fuel lines are but a few of the symptoms of bad fuel. 1 Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted July 4, 2015 Super User Posted July 4, 2015 Drain the float bowl on the carb, and add a can of seafoam to the gas tank. Quote
Brnnoser6983 Posted July 6, 2015 Author Posted July 6, 2015 Okay. So I went back to it with my father in law. To answer a couple questions first. I did seafoam to the gas, and it is fresh gas for this year. I drained the bowl prior to posting. The problem has been fixed but there was more than one problem. First problem was the plugs where right but the gap was off... way off on one. Second problem was the fuel regulator. It is electric but there is a manual switch. This was off not allowing any fuel in. And lastly I crossed the plug wires.. (felt so stupid about this one) but it is up and running 100% now.. thanks for the suggestions! Quote
Al Wolbach Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 Glad it is fixed and thanks for the feedback. Quote
Super User Ratherbfishing Posted July 6, 2015 Super User Posted July 6, 2015 Yep, crossing the wires would do it. Quote
