Super User everythingthatswims Posted July 2, 2015 Super User Posted July 2, 2015 My grandfather was throwing out some old PVC hose and a big pipe.....And that's when It hit me. Real brush is easier to sink but this stuff is a lot nicer to the hooks with fewer hangups. It's going into a private lake don't worry. Who else does this? 9 Quote
BASSPATROL247 Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 And it will pretty much last forever compared to 2-5 yrs of real brush.. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted July 2, 2015 Super User Posted July 2, 2015 Looks good! Rough up all the tubes to help promote quicker algae growth! Jeff 2 Quote
Canyon explorer Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 I fish two docks on LOZ that have them and they work as well as hard wood brush and fish better than cedar. 1 Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted July 2, 2015 Super User Posted July 2, 2015 Looks great! Just as good as the ones you can buy! Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted July 2, 2015 Super User Posted July 2, 2015 I used to put out Christmas trees in front of my dad's dock every January. I did it for maybe 15 years. This is much better. But the trees were free. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted July 2, 2015 Super User Posted July 2, 2015 I have done a bunch of different designs. Always fun to do in the winter! Jeff 1 Quote
MFBAB Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 Nice job. Any plastic will work, I have made pvc attractors and caught crappie off of them the same day at times. I pick up those plastic hose carts that always leak and the white plastic chairs that always break every time I see them on the side of the road. They make great mats!! 1 Quote
NathanW Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 This is littering!! Don't you care about our planet? Have you okayed this with the department of ecology? Don't you know this could impact the tiger salamander population! On another note. Can you provide a waypoint? Also what are you using for a base to keep it upright and secure? I cannot wait to get my spot on the lake so I can plant these puppies all over while my neighbors are sleeping. 1 Quote

Two 10' pieces of PVC in a cross attached to the base to keep it from falling over, and underneath that, a block of concrete. Quote
Smokinal Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 I have been wanting to make one of these for a while now and you just lit the fire. Would it be a bad thing to lay it down though? I was thinking of a slightly longer version of what you have but leave one side empty. Then put some concrete in the middle of the tube and sink it so it lays down lengthwise. It would be shallower but cover more bottom. I want one off my favorite point in about 25 fow. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted July 2, 2015 Super User Posted July 2, 2015 I have a travel trailer parked at shallow bay. One day I made some fish attractors out of pallets and other stuff and threw them out in front of the camp. When the water would get low it looked like a trash dump so I removed it all. Plus my dad always got snagged up . Quote
massrob Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 Wow that's awesome it looks like one of the ones you can buy. Good job man. Quote

I don't see why it wouldn't work. This lake is good for crappie too so that's my main reason for keeping it standing up, they like vertical structure. Quote

Shanes7614 Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 You can also fill the bottom cross section with concrete and no need for tying it to blocks. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted July 3, 2015 Super User Posted July 3, 2015 Fill a 5 gallon bucket (or something similar) 1/3 of the way with quickcrete. Place you pvc in and then add water. Let it sit overnight, and you are good to go. Here are some links to threads where my pics are posted: http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/128444-xmas-tree-brush-piles/?hl=%20brush%20%20piles http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/109401-fishing-in-the-middle-of-brush-pilesupdated1111/?hl=%2Bfish+%2Battractors#entry1193188 http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/111205-a-little-work-ahead-of-me/?hl=%2Bfish+%2Battractors#entry1212520 http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/128428-pvc-trees-do-they-hold-largemouth/?hl=%2Bfish+%2Battractors#entry1417020 Jeff 1 Quote
MFBAB Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 Another way to do it: Get some dish washing tubs, fill w quikrete, put the pvc in, then let it dry. Afterward, just pop it out of the tub and re-use the tub to make another one. This just saves a few bucks per mat on the 5 gallon buckets, and I like cheap Also, if you just want to make an anchor, use the dish tub form and put a piece of wire or a wire hanger in it with a loop hanging out. This will give you something to tie brush to. Brush or bamboo is obviously even cheaper than pvc, but also snaggy. One other point: I think the best mats for forage fish or fry survival are high density, like a wad of brush or a bunch of milk crates tied together, something that a predator can't follow them into. Lower density mats like the typical pvc ones will attract predators and some forage fish, they just don't offer as much protection for them. A happy medium is to stick a bundle of brush or milk crates beneath the pvc mat, these will produce better most of the time in my experience and you can still fish it without snagging too much. Quote
