Well, I'm at that place where I need to make a decision. Either put some money into my crankin' reel, or get something new.  The bait monkey has voted (numerous times) and I'm leaning toward the new answer.  My Daiwa Advantage has been filling in the last week or so, but it's a little on the heavy side and the 6.3:1 gearing is working me a little harder than I prefer and it's a little heavier that what I'd like.

I'm a Daiwa guy, but I'm not married to them, just looking for something that can stand the hard work. Something in the 4.9-5.2 gear range moderately priced.  I had a 3.8 Curado some years back and although a little slow, that thing wouldn't quit.

You might find a Daiwa crazy cranker second hand. I have a revo winch that I like and on a budget the pq comes in 5.1 and 4.7:1. The curator e In 5:1 is another good one. You can't go wrong with any of them really

I've been using the Tatula 5.4 and it has been solid, but....I don't do a lot of deep cranking so it is not my most used reel.

I've been really enjoying my 4.7 PQ . feels solid, casts great. I'm pretty happy....esp with the price I picked up off of here used.

if your a die hard daiwa fan like me then i would for sure pick up the daiwa lexa on TW in 4.9:1 for $60. and also get the 4th of july discount if you can wait 3 days!

I really like my old curado bantam for crankin

Tatula 5.4:1 is  a great cranking reel. Bombs your baits out there with ease and nice, smooth and powerful retrieve. I think you would be very pleased. Can be had for $99 shipped.

Im a lews guy so my vote goes first to a BB1, but I recently picked up a Tatula and that thing is a beast.

Curado 200IPG.

X2.  Used one cranking for 6 days straight & really found it to be flawless pulling big cranks including SK 10XD's

I have an older Calcutta 251 that I use for big deep cranks.  That thing is built like a tank.  If I had to pick outside the Shimano line, I have fished but not purchased yet, the Abu Garcia Revo Winch and the Toro Winch (big reel) would be my choices.  They both are not smoothest reel. But the power of the drag, the big bait casting ability, and the over all, get the job done, feel is exactly what I like for that type of application.

I have and use luna's and there a good reel but then you mention weight.  I also have a zillion HLC that I use on a dobyns 764RM that is the bee's knee's.  I have seen a project on TT for a cranking steez and the people that have built them are all about it.  If you can find a 5.3 zillion j-dream I think you would be very pleased.

Back in the 60s, I was fairly evenly invested in Daiwa, Penn and Shimano,
but since that time I've had a serious falling out with Diawa
(The Advantage was one of their clunkers, followed by a Steez that fell short of my Stradic)

Though I'm not a fan of round reels nor steep prices,

the "Calcutta TE 201GT" seems to scream "Buy Me"

I've been doing the vast majority of my cranking with the Shimano 200D ~

You Can Not go wrong with this one.

I just bought a Lexa 4.9:1 and like it so far. Cast well and grinds those big baits in with ease.

Another vote for the Curado 200I PG with the 5.5:1 gear ratio. It BOMBS your lures and the external brake dial helps you really keep backlashes at pay in changing wind conditions.
