Hurricane Posted July 1, 2015 Author Posted July 1, 2015 Is there any specific kind that won't dig into the reel screw up casting? Quote
FSUMF333 Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 I myself prefer suffix 832 but I was impressed with stren as well. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted July 1, 2015 Super User Posted July 1, 2015 Digging in is usually caused by thin line, and lots of resistance (fish taking drag, getting snagged an torquing on the lure with the line, etc). With that, my vote goes to 832. I was starting to like the Seaguar Smackdown, but I found it's almost too supple and I ended up having lots of issues with it. Quote
Dan_the_fisher Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Power pro super slick, 50lb minimum for bc because of digging on small braid Quote

What lb test do you use with the 832 on your baitcaster? Quote
Super User Master Bait'r Posted July 2, 2015 Super User Posted July 2, 2015 I was starting to like the Seaguar Smackdown, but I found it's almost too supple and I ended up having lots of issues with it. *GASP* BLASPHEMY!!! The only problem I ever ran into with Smackdown is that the finesse diameters are so fine that they can actually get caught in the space at the end of the hook eye and break off during a fight. Just buy epoxied-eye hooks and it is a non issue though. Never had to deal with that before haha... I love Smackdown though, it's just so thin, strong and quiet. I put #40 on my HXF Frog/Jig/medium simbaits rod and can't believe how much farther I can cast over 55# FX2. It's probably a good 20% if I had to estimate without being too generous because I love it so much. I just wish it was a little less expensive. I personally think it's worth it but it is still on the expensive side. I'm not really a fan of 832 simply because of teh waxy coating they have on them. It makes knot tying weird and grabby to me. OP, it's 100% an individual preference thing. As you can see from just the few responses, there is no such thing as a consensus on what is "best" much like ice cream flavors or anything else for that matter. We are fortunate enough to be fishing in this day and age when there are literally dozens and dozens of perfectly good options- it just depends on which characteristics you're looking for in a braid. You may not have enough experience with braid to even know yet, so if that's the case I'd say go with Power Pro original. It's pretty much the baseline standard for inexpensive, strong and supple braid and as such it gets recommended a TON. If you find down the line that it is behaving in a way that you don't like, then you can dial in your next re-spool based on your experiences and wants/needs. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted July 2, 2015 Super User Posted July 2, 2015 What lb test do you use with the 832 on your baitcaster? 40 lb for cranks/moving baits 50 lb for jigs and frogs Quote
Hogsticker Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 I agree with Masterbait'r 100%. Smackdown is legit. Never hsd dig issues with any braid in any pound test once I learned how to use it. Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 Another Power Pro fan here,50# is my favorite strength for baitcasters because it just handles so well on them. Quote
Jon G Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 Suffix 832 is my vote. But I do like FX2. I did not like SS8 at all. Quote

Stupid question, but I can't remember, was 832 a floating braid? I thought I heard something about it being a non-floating line. Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted July 5, 2015 Super User Posted July 5, 2015 I tried Berkley pro braid, and it was ok at first. But after not too many uses the line flattened out and didn't cast worth a d**n. I switched to Spiderwire stealth braid and had no complaints but I've since switched to Power Pro and it's by far my favorite. Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted July 5, 2015 Super User Posted July 5, 2015 A good place to start would be Power Pro #40lb. braid as it has the diameter of #10lb. mono - which is about the min. line size recommended for baitcast reels . You could do just about anything you want with the size braid (with or without a mono or FC leader) . The only exception is if you were throwing a frog in "heavy spinach" then you would want to bump up to #50lb. to #65lb. braid . Conversely , if you were throwing a smaller bait in clear , open , snag-free water you could use #30lb. braid for added distance BUT you need to wind it on very tight and keep the line wound on tight to prevent digging in issues ( lightening your drag a bit also prevents line digging) . To sum up , try #40lb. Power Pro braid as your starting baseline baitcaster braid and then adjust up or down according to your needs . Buy in only150 yrd. spool sizes until you find a braid you are really happy with - then you can look for 300yrd. spools on sale in your favorite braid brand. I also suggest using a cheap #10lb. ~ #12lb. mono backing (I use inexpensive Zebco brand mono found at WM - soft and spools well !) filled to about 30% ~ 40% capacity and then using a double uni or Crazy Alberta knot to connect mono to braid spool the rest of the reel up with braid to 1/8" on the spool lip (you should get a couple of reels filled per one spool of 150 yrd. braid this way) . If you want to expand to another brand I would recommend Sufix 832 in above sizes as it has a about a 90% approval rating . A "sleeper" braid I have had good success with is the Stren braid found at TW , DSG's and other places as it does everything pretty well and is inexpensive (<$15.00 per 150 yrd. spool) . Hope this helps ! 1 Quote
quiksilver86 Posted July 17, 2024 Posted July 17, 2024 Power pro almost always snaps on rocks or rough fishing areas. Plus when I use a leader the double uni tends to snap off. In my experience yo zuri braid or even spider pro series is excellent. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted July 18, 2024 Super User Posted July 18, 2024 Powerpro is so outdated . Vicious no fade braid is the best Quote
