I need help choosing a new swimbait rod. usually only throw swimbaits up to 2 ounces but i will be using this for hybrid stripped bass, they are very strong fish so this rod needs to be sensitive and strong. thanks!

i would highly suggest an ugly stick light. Its unbreakable and also its fairley light weight. its got the power to fight those stripers and it can also double as a catfish rod.

Ugly Stick and sensitive are two words that don't go together.

Okuma guide select

Daiwa dx

Irod genesis II

Those are a few right off hand that aren't super expensive. A budget could help us give you more info.

How important is sensitivity in a rod that ur throwing 2oz swimbaits on??? Id think anything hitting those baits are gonna make their presence know on any rod regardless of sensitivity..is sensitivity even that important for that application? If stripers r anything like their cousins they dont nip, they hammer baits full throttle.. i could be wrong but i dont throw big swimbaits hardly ever... if i did any one of my MH or H rods would work for me..

where im fishing these hybrids at it is usually 35 to 50 foot deep water and they usually always hit on the fall, which is when there is slack in the line. i used a old bionic blade im8 and you couldnt really feel the bite that well so i switched to one of my buddys kistler rods and there was a huge difference you could actually feel them hit it without watching the line. so sensitivity does play a role

Ahhhh..i see.. well that makes sense. None of the 5 lakes i fish most are deeper than about 30 ft and theirs no strippers i mean stripers either.. im sold ☺

They don't always hammer baits like you may think. I can feel small ones hitting the blades of my spinnerbaits and totally missing the body. That's NOT something your gonna feel with an ugly stick.

By spinnerbaits i assume you mean bass and not stripers? If so im aware of the importance of a good rod in that regard... you can feel almost anything with braid regardless of the rod 95% of the time, at least for me..

Ugly stiks were some of the first rods i started with and they were prob more sensitive than you would think, i bet the new ones r even better. I still use a couple for channel cats and there is not a better rod out there for them imo..

Just to clarify a couple things.

Are stripers not bass??? From what I know and I could be wrong but there is two types of "stripers". Firstly there are striped BASS that live mostly in salt water and then return to fresh water to spawn. Then there are stripers, whipers, or their original name, a HYBRID striped bass which live in fresh water mostly or some with brackish water. If these are the "stripers" you speak of they most certainly will hit a spinnerbait. These are the ones I refer to in my post as I believe most guys here fresh water fish more then salt. Hybrid striped bass however have a smaller mouth then their salt water relatives as they are a combo of a striped bass and a white bass. In Florida they are even called sunshine bass. When schooling the smaller fish will also chase whatever baits the school has rounded up and feeding on. When using a spinnerbait the smaller ones will target on the shine of the blades and strike the blades only as they again have a way smaller mouth. You can easily feel this as your reeling through open water and there is a brief vibration stoppage as if you have fouled your bait and then continue vibrating again.

I too also began fishing with an ugly stick and do believe they have many purposes. Sensitivity is not one of its best qualities. I'm sure over the years they have improved but you are always limited at how much sensitivity you can get from a fiberglass rod. I loved the durability as mine as a kid took a beating. The price range is certainly a deal when on a budget or a young kid starting off. Many bass fishermen use fiberglass blanks for crankbaits and other moving baits where a desired delay is caused by a more drastic parabolic curve and again less sensitive so guys don't "jump the gun" and set a hook too soon or too hard. Hopefully this clarifies what I was trying to explain to the OP.

Yes i was aware stripers, hybrid striped, wipers, whites, sunshine(never heard that one..nice.)etc.. are bass, in my area when someone says bass anyone will assume largemouth..all the hybrid names are referred to that.. i can see how you may have thought i wasnt aware and that was my fault.

You may have assumed i was touting ugly stiks as sensitive rods and i was not, i was trying to say that for his budget a ugly stik with braid will give you alot more feel and is a good deal for what he wanted all ugly stiks are not 100% fiberglass and unlike when i was using them compared to now theres a bunch of different models and all are not whippy crankbait rods.. hope that clears up what i was trying to say.. and thanks for clarifying what you meant, well taken..

I'm sure they have gotten plenty better. I personally would suggest a Berkley Lightning series rod or something made of all graphite for general bass fishing. I believe they are along the same price range. As to sunshine bass I had never heard of it before I moved here myself. I have caught saltwater stripers up to #38 and the freshwater version my largest is 8#. Both are extremely fun to catch.

Yeah ive had horrible luck with lightning rods breaking from fish??? But i will say for the money and before mine all broke they are about as good as it gets for the price but not if they break...

Thats funny... I've had one for at least 10 years and I beat the hell out of it and haven't had it break this entire time. Now saying this I'm sure it will break sometime soon... Lol

Yeah i have freinds that have used them forever with no problems but none of my three made it more than a couple years except the shock, it broke the first day i used it??
