microotter Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 I recently ordered this rod bc i got a killer deal, and I do not have a moderate action rod in my line up. What would this rod excel at besides lightweight crankbaits? What can I use this rod for? I am fairly new to bass fishing. The lure rating is 1/4-1/2 oz. 6-12 lb line. Will 8 lb yozuri hybrid be ok on a casting reel? Also what reel would pair well with this rod? My reel bedget is around $200. Quote

I have 8# mono on quite a few reels and 6# on at least 3 with 6# probably being the choice for a 4th b/c reel. At $200 the Daiwa Alphas SV is going to be my next reel. It is said to be a very forgiving reel. Also I am a fan of all the Alphas reels I've tried so far. However, at 1/4 oz. minimum there will be quite a few reels in that price range that will work on that rod. BTW, my Falcon Medium rods are all rated for 1/4-1/2 oz. For me a ML for freshwater isn't a ML unless it will go down to 1/8 oz. I can't offer any advice on what else to use the rod for because I have never touched one much less fished one. I do know that the Aetos line are some very fine rods. Good luck with your new purchase. A light reel on that rod should make a killer combo. One reel I can highly recommend is the Pinnacle Primmus. Got mine for just under $157 shipped...not from TW, tho. This reel is hand tuned from the factory. Man is it smooth. Also a nice looking reel as well. Weight 5.9 oz. Quote
microotter Posted June 30, 2015 Author Posted June 30, 2015 Thank you for the well thought out reply! I thought the rating seemed more on line to some of my medium spinning rods. I didnt know if maybe it was higher bc of the moderate action. I know people usually recommend moderate rods for treble hooked lures, but i was hoping that I could use this rod for other applications as well. I will check out the reels that you suggested! Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted June 30, 2015 Super User Posted June 30, 2015 I have this rod, it is a specifically made shallow cranking rod. I use mine for jerkbaits as well, I really like a medium power, fast action rod for jerkbaits but in cold water with suspending jerkbaits, a moderate action rod works quite well, and this rod handles X-Rap-10s as well as it does the X-Rap-8s. You aren't going to use this rod for anything other than treble hook lures, it is simply too soft for anything else, it probably isn't what you want to hear but it is the truth. I really love mine because there isn't a better rod to fish the smaller 1/4oz and 3/8oz shallow cranks, this rod will handle 1/2oz as well but it has to be a shallow diver. I really like throwing a DT-4 , Baby 1 minus, and a KVD 1.5 with mine for river smallmouth and it is absolutely a killer popper rod, the Yo-Zuri 3DS 1/4oz popper is awesome to use on that rod. Quote
microotter Posted June 30, 2015 Author Posted June 30, 2015 Hrmm it may still be a good choice for me. I spend a lot of time chasing smallies on the river. I was hoping that I could throw finesse spinnerbaits and buzzbaits with it. What reel do you use on this rod smalljaw? Quote

I was hoping that I could throw finesse spinnerbaits and buzzbaits with it. What reel do you use on this rod smalljaw? I have a Lews Tournament Pro 6.4:1 on mine, I'm not sure about using the spinnerbait or buzzbait because the hooks are too heavy in diameter, even on smaller baits. If you fish small cranks then you owe it to yourself to at least try it, I have a hard time putting it down and it has more power than what you would think but it comes in small increments until you get to the backbone and I don't think it will consistently drive home a single hook. A Booyah pond magic buzzbait or spinnerbait may be able to be used and I know that with the right reel you should have no problem casting one of those little spinnerbaits. It is a fun rod to fish and I use it for largemouth too, I got a 5lb 1oz bruiser with it last season fishing a rip rap bank early in the morning by banging a Bagley Balsa B off the rocks in 2.5' of water and the rod handled the fish like a champ. microotter Posted July 1, 2015 Author Posted July 1, 2015 Is a lower ratio reel needed for shallow cranking and light crankbaits? Also, is there a way or a resource where I can determine how light of a lure a reel is capable on throwing? I know other factors go into determining that as well. I will be using yzh #8 and the mentioned rod. Quote

I will be using yzh #8 and the mentioned rod.Lots of people like using mid or high gear ratio reels when shallow cranking because shallow cranks create less resistance than deeper/larger baits. As for me, I only have 1 rod for all crankbait applications, so I use a low gear ratio, but the Bait Monkey has peeked my curiosity in a Tatula for Squarebills, and a new, longer rod for all other crankbaits, so that will change soon 1 Quote

I don't fish lipped cranks, and hardly ever throw spinnerbaits (and obviously I'm not "smalljaw"). But I do fish quarter ounce buzzbaits on a BPS medium power cranking stick (7'6", 1/4 to 5/8 oz). Works like a charm. Caught 8 on a buzzer this morning. It's basically my all-purpose rod for lighter non-bottom bumping baits. I fish braid on it though. Quote

I will be using yzh #8 and the mentioned rod. Well Jakob 1010 answered the question on the gear ratio perfectly, for shallow cranks and topwaters I'll use a faster reel, the topwater it picks up the slack and the shallow cranks don't have the resistance of a deep diver so torque isn't an issue. Now, Deep uses a BPS medium cranking stick that is a foot longer for buzzers and it is perfectly fine, completely different rod, the extra foot in length it going to help a bit with driving the hook simply because of the amount of line it moves on the swing, not to mention it is a medium power. The rod you have is a medium light, it weighs almost a full 3 ounces less than the BPS stick and it softer with less backbone, it would be the same difference as comparing a 6'6" medium power rod to a 7'6" MH power rod, apples and oranges. I have that rod and know its capabilities well, I got it with the intention of it being a finesse cranking rod with no thoughts on if it could handle anything else and it has been an awesome rod, it has a good deal of power for the kind of rod it is and that power translates into handling the larger 3/8and 7/16oz lure fine, some rods rated to 1/2oz start topping out at 3/8oz but the action is still very soft as it is designed to keep small size 8 and 6 trebles pinned, not drive home heavy diameter single hooks. I believe a pond magic spinnerbait and buzzbait would be the largest that this rod will be able to fish and drive the hooks in consistently, anything larger and the hook diameter becomes and issue. microotter Posted July 6, 2015 Author Posted July 6, 2015 I bought a bunch of small, shallow diving crankbaits now I just need a reel. Im thinking about grabbing the Lew's tournament pro. I'm concerned that I will have troubles throwing a 1/4 ounce hardbait on a baitcaster. Will I have to buy a shallow spool or make other modifications? I'd like to stay under $200 on the reel. Quote
microotter Posted July 31, 2015 Author Posted July 31, 2015 I ended up saving up and got a lews team lews lite for this rod. This is a really fun combo to catch bass on! It works great for kvd 1.5" squarebills. I like finesse crankbait fishing. I landed all the bites that I got on this rod. The hookup ratio is perfect so far! 1 Quote

That rod has opened a new world to me, I can fish the small Zell Pops, now the Booyah Boss Pop, very effectively without overpowering it like I use to and the results are terrific, I get more strikes because my baits are working better. My favorite baits so far with this are the Manns 1 minus and Manns Baby X, Sebile Crankster SR 50, The KVD 1.5, and most small 1/4oz poppers. The other really nice thing is my hook up to landing percentage with these baits has gone through the roof, and I can't tell you how many fish I've caught with this rod but I can tell you that I lost 1 and I caught over a hundred fish with it. The thing is a shallow crank beast but sadly it is a one dimensional rod but it is perfect, I even use my DT-6 with it and it is a match made in heaven, an awesome rod for finesse cranks. Quote
microotter Posted July 31, 2015 Author Posted July 31, 2015 I will need to buy some small poppers to try! I like the mann's 1 minus too. I bought a norman flat broke, but some reason I cant get it to swim right. The norman thin n does well on this set up though. I never heard of the baby x. I might have to give it a try too. Quote
