(='_'=) Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 hey. fishing season just started here, and i have a good lake 10 minutes from home and just behind my GFs house, its a 5 minute walk from her house to the lake... so, i would like to store a couple of rods in my jeep, so i can go fishing in the morning before work or in any spare time i have... normally i store the rods in a vertical holder inside the house. so, i want to ask, if the heat (we are in the mid 80s but we reach up to 100* F) or storing them horizontally can damage them?? i dont have really expensive rods, they are a couple of Falcons and a Veritas, but i dont want to bend or damage them in any way.... this is what i built to store them: Quote
Shanes7614 Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Looks good. As long as you don't see any significant bowing in the middle of the rods you should be just fine. However keep in mind the heat inside your car can get well over the actual temps outside the car. An issue you may run into is the grease inside your reels liquefying and possibly leaking out. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted June 30, 2015 Super User Posted June 30, 2015 i have a similar set up in my jeep and haven't seen any ill effects having them in the jeep for the past 2 seasons Quote
Super User HoosierHawgs Posted June 30, 2015 Super User Posted June 30, 2015 How did you make the storage rack? Is it permanently mounted or can it be removed? Quote
(='_'=) Posted June 30, 2015 Author Posted June 30, 2015 thanx! the rods dont sag as they are resting behind the reel and almost at the middle. maybe if the supports were farther apart the rods would have more bow, but they dont... however, due to the reels weight, they will be basically always at the same position, so i was thinking they could get damaged over time.... 2 rods have braid, but one does has mono on it.... i will keep an eye on it... and yes, the temps inside can et hotter than outside i know, but i dont know how much or how can it affect.... (='_'=) Posted June 30, 2015 Author Posted June 30, 2015 How did you make the storage rack? Is it permanently mounted or can it be removed? it can be easily removed, as its just velcroed to the rollbar.... on the first pics you can see the velcro... Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted June 30, 2015 Super User Posted June 30, 2015 I do something similair but I don't leave the reels on. I store the reels in a bag. Quote
Super User MickD Posted June 30, 2015 Super User Posted June 30, 2015 Sounds like you're good to go. But. . . If temps get really high tiptops might move. Most use a hot melt adhesive. If this happens, I think the temps should be lowered through better ventilation, parking in the shade, etc. I would not epoxy them on since they will be very difficult to replace if necessary later. If the temps are hot enough to move the tiptops I would be worried about the rod blanks, too. Quote

Super User Choporoz Posted June 30, 2015 Super User Posted June 30, 2015 I have straps like these: http://geosangkorea.en.ec21.com/CAR_Vehicle_Fishing_Fish_Rod--8397595_8398873.html Been keeping my rods (and the rest of my gear) in the car all season for years and never had any issues whatsoever. I always crack the windows when parked, but that's as much because I air out the cigar smoke as much as for the gear. The only thing I'm careful to take out of the car after every trip is the JJ's Magic. Everything else stays. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted June 30, 2015 Super User Posted June 30, 2015 I've been using something similar for about seven years, and have seen no problems; even in 100+ degree heat. Quote
WPCfishing Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Nice job... Fit, Form, Function! I personally don't think leaving the rods and reels in a hot car is good for them. Just my opinion. Quote
monkeyman3dee Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 I try not to leave my rods and tackle in a hot car. You are better off storing them in a nice environment than subjecting them to extreme temps, that is hardly good for anything. Quote

monkeyman3dee Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 Why am I better off? What is the risk at the temps inside my car? I left my rods in the car once, when fishing them I noticed a lot of line memory, almost brittle line. Ended up re-spooling. and some of my lures looked warped. Another post a few posts up mentions melting reel grease, haven't had that happened to me but makes sense. Either way its up to you, you asked the question. I do not believe it is in your equipments best interest to subject them to extreme temps! Maybe leave em in there anyways to see what happens exactly? Quote
AdamsEye Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 A lot of pros drive large suv's just so they can store the rods like this, so I think you will be fine. If your worried get that solar window fan to keep the air moving. Quote
(='_'=) Posted July 2, 2015 Author Posted July 2, 2015 thanx!! i also thought it could cause some damage, but wanted to know some first hand experience from someone who actually had something bad happen to his rods... im leaving them there for now, because im fishing almost daily, but i will remove at least the rods if i know im not going in a couple of days....
