Kyrazzy7 Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 ok i got a question. my reel says 120yrds/12lb. so can i put all 150yrds of 40lb braid (10lb dia) or is that too much line on the reel? also is it true that the less line you have on the shorter you will cast. and im talking half the spool being filled. thanks! Quote
JeziHogg Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 Think about this, will you really need 150 yrds? fill like 1/3 of it with a cheap mono, leaving you with about 100 yrds of braid. As for half full and casting, if its a baitcaster, then yes. Spinning reel not 100% sure, but I wouldn't think so. Quote
Penguino Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 Like JeziHogg said, you only actually need 75 yards of braid or so for bass. The rest you can fill with cheap 12lb mono. Also, under-filling will definitely reduce casting distance, but overfilling can actually be worse, as it causes huge problems. A good rule of thumb would be to follow the 1/8 inch rule when spooling line on. Quote
einscodek Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 think about it you want the spool nearly filled cause at the top end of the spool the diameter means more line per rotation of the shaft so more line goes out with each rotation initially and yes as the other guys said you dont need more than 75 yds on the spool to be braid .. can use filler ..I dont know many dudes who can cast braid even 50 yards Quote

Kyrazzy7 Posted June 29, 2015 Author Posted June 29, 2015 And just to clarify I should fill it almost full? Quote
John G Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 I use a Uni to Uni knot from most line to line connections and your spool should have some sort of indicator on it telling you when to stop filling the line. If not, stop about an 1/8" before the edge of the spool. Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted June 29, 2015 Super User Posted June 29, 2015 Do you use a leader or run straight braid to lure? Quote
Kyrazzy7 Posted June 29, 2015 Author Posted June 29, 2015 Do you use a leader or run straight braid to lure? I run straight braid to lure. Is that bad? I'm usually just fishing frogs and other top water lures Quote
Kyrazzy7 Posted June 29, 2015 Author Posted June 29, 2015 Which of these two braids is better? I have the one on the left but is there any advantages of the right braid?? Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted June 29, 2015 Super User Posted June 29, 2015 I run straight braid to lure. Is that bad? I'm usually just fishing frogs and other top water lures I dont think its bad at all. I do very well in clear waters doing it. Because of this though Ill differ with the others about only using 75 yards per spool. It would actually cost less overall filling spool full of braid and then as it gets used start adding backing of mono to bring back to capacity. A frog can be tossed rather far and once you get to the connection knot(weak point) on a cast that is when to get rid of what is left and put new line. So if you use just a top shot you will be losing say 100'+ of line, if you do this 2 times per spool you lose a total of 200'. Now if you use just straight braid to fill the spool you after time will only lose 100' saving100' of line. Some people say/think a full spool of braid casts better than when using mono to fill the spool. Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted June 29, 2015 Super User Posted June 29, 2015 Which of these two braids is better? I have the one on the left but is there any advantages of the right braid?? PPS8S going to be much quieter and smoother other than that will cost more. Quote
Kyrazzy7 Posted June 29, 2015 Author Posted June 29, 2015 PPS8S going to be much quieter and smoother other than that will cost more. Smoother as in better casting? Do you think it's worth the 10$+ more dollars it costs? And I've always liked using just braid. I grew up in Alaska and always used braid while fishing halibut and salmon. Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted June 29, 2015 Super User Posted June 29, 2015 Ive not used 40# in these products but I have used 10-15-20# in both. Other than noise level not really any difference to me casting difference is negligible. Once my PP runs out though dont think Ill ever buy any more just really prefer 8 carrier/strand lines now. Me I just wait til s8s goes on sale for $15 or so. Quote
Kyrazzy7 Posted June 29, 2015 Author Posted June 29, 2015 I think I'll try it out an see how it is. An ill prob fill the spool just about full Quote

hawkoath Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 I run straight braid to lure. Is that bad? I'm usually just fishing frogs and other top water lures I would run straight braid to a frog because if I'm throwing them they are usually going to be on top of weeds/lilies or very close to them and the bass can get into vegetation and weeds pretty quickly. Having the frog tied to straight braid would lessen the chance of losing an expensive frog. Other top water lures I would probably go with a fluorocarbon leader as the water in WA would be what is considered clear or very clear in other parts of the country and I feel it does help in getting bites. Ok. Yea I haven't been fishing bass to long so I appreciate the knowledge. Here in eastern wa the water I'm fishing is brown almost muddy looking. I've only caught LMB but I guess the Columbia river is one of the best smallmouth fisheries in the nation. Quote

Tim Kelly Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Looks about right, you could probably squeeze a bit more on if you wanted to, but it should be easy to control with the line level you have at the moment. Quote
John G Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Is this too much line on the spool.. It's not enough line IMHO. Where the Orange and black meet is your indicator to stop filling. Also, your braid looks really loose. Braid should be put on under a very decent amount of tension or it could cause casting problems later. What I would do if that were my reel is I would find a large field or large parking lot and I would tie the loose end of the braid to a tree, fence post, light pole etc and walk it out till I reach the end and then reel in under my drag pressure. Don't listen to the naysayers that say it does not matter how tight braid is spooled on a reel because it will get loose anyway after the first cast. The casting length will not be as tight after the first time but most everything under it will stay really tight. Your braid looks ridiculously loose and needs to be out on tighter. 1 Quote

I felt like I put it on too tight. If I put it on as tight as your saying won't it start to dig into itself? Quote
