LittleBob Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 So I will be leaving for the LOZ next Saturday for a week and will be staying around the area of the Shawnee Bend boat ramp (around Ozarks BBQ). We had some decent luck last last year with 10 inch power worms but I'm hoping to do a little better this year. I read some of the older posts on here about trips down there and seems black and blue jigs and PBJ jigs were productive in years past. Just asking for any pointers or a little bit of a fishing report. Any help would be tremendously appreciated. Thanks in advance, Bob Quote
Super User gardnerjigman Posted June 29, 2015 Super User Posted June 29, 2015 Fish brush piles in front of docks with creature/beaver baits. The 10" worm will work there too. Put them on a rocker jig head. If you can skip jigs and such you will be more productive. If you can skip jigs use a fluke or senko on spinning gear to get under docks. Main lake points should be pretty hot, I like dragging a berkley power hawg in green pumpkin on a rocker head. Frogs in the backs of coves and creeks will work early and late. Buzzbaits and spooks behind docks are usually a pretty safe bet. Don't be afraid to throw a shaky head on that pea gravel. That's all for now. Quote
LittleBob Posted June 30, 2015 Author Posted June 30, 2015 Haven't tried fishing a shaky head to much so that would be as good of time as any if the bite gets toughto give it a whirl. Thanks for the reply definitely have some stuff to try now, really appreciate it! Thanks, Bob Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 1, 2015 Global Moderator Posted July 1, 2015 Shakyhead trick worm in green pumpkin/red flake has probably caught me more fish at LOZ than anything else. A PB&J football or finesse jig is usually really good too, as is a wacky rig around the docks. A spook seems to be really hard for the spots on that lake to resist. Quote
evilcatfish Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 All the advice above is good, but my number 1 suggestion is be careful and safe. No way I'm fishing LOZ this time of year (especially on the weekends) Quote

Early during weekdays this time of year is your best bet. Party barges and the drinking folk usually aren't out at sunrise, so you always have a few hours of safe travel time. I've fished that lake a lot, and you won't catch me out from 9:30 AM on this time of year. Where he is staying you have to travel the main channel to get anywhere. If you aren't afraid of night fishing, this lake produces some giants at night as well. Quote

In the morning buzzbaits or sammys. Quote
LittleBob Posted July 1, 2015 Author Posted July 1, 2015 Yah we usually tend to got off the lake and we are back to the resort by about 10 to 10:30 at the latest just because like you guys said it's not safe. I just crappie fish from the docks during the day with the family to keep busy and we head back out at night after things calm down a bit. Thanks again guys for all the advice and tips! Bob Quote
cbass12 Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 Not sure if this will really happen but it would make for some pleasant fishing this weekend. Who knows how good the fishing would be with the high water, but you won't have to deal with boat wake.a http://fox4kc.com/2015/07/02/missouri-state-highway-patrol-discusses-limiting-lake-of-the-ozarks-to-no-wake-zone/ Quote
Super User gardnerjigman Posted July 2, 2015 Super User Posted July 2, 2015 That's going to make for and interesting weekend. Quote

Hopefully all your fishing spots are in one cove! Quote
LittleBob Posted July 3, 2015 Author Posted July 3, 2015 Hopefully the no wake is lifted within a few days, I was hoping to get to the Gravois and do some fishing there, guess I'll just have to see how everything plays out. In all honesty I'll just be happy I'm fishing haha Quote

In all honesty I'll just be happy I'm fishing haha Honestly I would advise against running to gravois even if you have the option. I stay around shawnee bend a few times a year as well and i used to run up to gravois occasionally. In my opinion, no one part of the lake is better and the gravois run is not worth it. I'd say to save time and money and just fish near where you're staying. Ive taken two guided trips from Shawnee as well and both guides stayed close by and did not run to gravois. Good luck! Quote

I agree with you, but don't let the guides sway you from running somewhere, especially the Gravois. Most of those guides are gonna put you on fish within a few miles of where you take out of. Less fuel burning they do, the more of your money stays in their pocket. Quote
Canyon explorer Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Sorry I missed your post until to late. By now you know LOZ was on Idle speed only since last week.. If you are still there start at OZ BBQ and the 2nd dock down on left past the restaurant has deep brush off the right corner. Use 10" Berkley Power worms and move on down a few docks to crappie dock good brush down to 20' across front. Work this bank along all docks to the back the same way. last few docks in back all have brush. They should be pulling water like crazy so all the main lake points should hold a few really good bass also. You can also catch Kentuckies off almost every condo dock corner by swimming eakin's jigs and jerkbaits tight to the corners. When I work this pattern I don't even turn the big motor off: pull up about 10 yards off corner work it with 2-3 casts and move on. Not unusual to catch 15-20 keeper Kentucky bass during middle of the day . Great pattern for the kids if you do the casting. Workmans creek across the lake has a lot of brush also. Alhonna Resort docks is a good spot for release fish, (all over 15") from previous tournaments. Quote
LittleBob Posted July 12, 2015 Author Posted July 12, 2015 Well guys I'm back from my week of fishing. Want to thank all of you for taking thw time giving me the advice you did. Got some decent fish after I found the bait they wanted the most that week and I got to test out my new rain gear haha. We did most of our fishing close to the resort due to some issues we had but all in all it was a good week of fishing and not being at work. Thanks again, Bob Quote
MO_LMB Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 Got some decent fish after I found the bait they wanted the most that week Well Bob, what did they want? Quote
LittleBob Posted July 18, 2015 Author Posted July 18, 2015 I caught most of my fish and my bigger ones on a missile baits destroyer in watermelon red fleck Texas rigged bringing it through brush out front of docks, yoyoing on the branches. I had some pretty good luck also pitching a Texas rigged senko in straight black up to the front of boat stalls as close to the dock floats as possible and just letting it pendulum back to me. I had the senkos soaked in hog tonic. But my best and hardest bites came off the destroyer. I also stuck a few on laydowns on a black and blue Sieberts dredge brush jig with a rage chunk trailer.
