For those of you who fish tournaments from the back of the boat what lures do you use to generally attract bigger fish.  Those you have confidence will get you a kicker fish or 2 ... or 3.  :)

I don't fish from the back of the boat, but I've heard it said

that the most popular co-angler bait is a Shaky Head Worm.

One of the most important things..........pay attention to the boater and his bait placement. Hit places he missed. That being said, if your fishing behind a machine that leaves no stone unturned, and he's catching fish, down size your offering. For example, if he's skipping a 5" senko under a dock, skip a 4", if he's using a jig, use a small creature bait or worm, etc..... If he's NOT catching fish, don't do what he's doing LOL.

Love fishing drop shot and a jig from back of the boat. Also a spinnerbait if I'm power fishing. Often times you can get a good reaction bite from tossing back at his fish. I've also ticked off a boater who despite not trying to catch that fish anymore claim it was their fish when you catch it. Only happened once but I'd imagine I'm not the only one.

If your aim is bigger fish, I assume you will be culling,  buzzbaits, Jigs with a big trailer and a SuperSpook for a kicker or two.  Work the buzzer fast, the jig whatever way you think is best and the Spook erratically. I mention three because the boater may have the TM on high.

When Aaron Martens was a teen competing in team tournaments with his mom Carol she would be the back seater and drag a slip shot rig behind the boat. The Martens won a lot of tournaments doing this.

Your front seater is very important to the success of the back seater and both should work together as a team.

The pace, speed, distance from where the bass are located allows the front seater who controls the boat determines how a back seater can fish. If you are a back seater, talk to the front seater and have a game plan.

If I'm in the back of the boat it's because I'm in a Team Tournament; which means I know the guy in the front very well!

Down here if you are hunting kicker bass you will be throwing a Texas Rig & a Jig-n-Craw!

Formula I've had success with - go bigger or go smaller - go faster or go slower - don't fish for the fish the guy in the front is fishing for - he isn't covering all of them.

If guy in front of you is flipping and trolling motor is on 80 then try to either keep up with him flipping or cover water across tops of weeds. Squarebill, fluke, spinnerbait, chatterbait, buzz bait.

If trolling motor is slow use stuff like t rigs, senko, shakey head, jigs. Stuff that you need to wait for the fall.

8/10 times if he's good, he'll be on fish. Then it's a 50/50 shot if he's gonna position the boat for you too.

If your paying gas money under tournament rules IMO cast wherever the hell you want. If your not then imagine there's a line going across the center of the boat and don't cast over that line. If it's team tourney you'll prob both Be on the front deck together half the time.

Which brings me to next point if he's back boating you after you just gave him $40 for gas and he's fishing a specific tree, dock or structure, ALL DAY. Communicate with him. A closed mouth doesn't get fed and in most scenarios you can go to the tournament director and get him DQ'd for back boating you.

^ all other scenarios Frogflogger above nailed it. If he's cranking a point try a C Rig. If he's skipping docks try senko. But If he's fishing a rock bluff and covering water with motor on 40-50 and getting them, you can copy what he's doing. Chances are you will have great success.

Remember it's a pro am format, you are the amateur. The pro is worried about him and only him. BUT then again out of the hundreds of tourneys I've fished as a co-angler, I can count on 1 hand how many boaters were complete jerks at first and after communicating with the person they ended up being great and helpful. Sometimes also in trails guys that are way far behind in points may only be fishing for lunker so a limit means nothing to them. So he may bust his arse trying to help you in his search for a hog.

Unless the trolling motor operator is paralleling the bank the back angler should have plenty of opportunities  to boat fish.  Sometimes even have an advantage, for instance fishing open water on windy days. Sometimes the front angler has to parallel the banks to maximize the catch . I won two club tournament from the back  and have had co anglers win from the back. Just  choose the lures and presentations that will work the best . Theres too many to list .

I would add a swimbait, otherwise this is the only reply that makes any sense, except can't remember being in the back seat!

I fish the back 40 about half the time and for me it all depends whats getting thrown from the front of the boat and what sort of structure/cover is being fished.. dont let fishing the back of the boat make you think your at an disadvantage...because your not. If anything ur better off because you can make more casts to a peice of cover than the frong guy and from more angles.. i prefer the back in most scenarios..
