Super User HoosierHawgs Posted June 27, 2015 Super User Posted June 27, 2015 What are your guys choices for an all around Jig/Plastic rod? This would be used generally for casting, rather than pitching/flipping. I plan on using anything from 3/16-3/4 oz jigs/plastic worms. I'm looking for actions/powers/lengths recommendations, or specific rod recommendations. Thanks guys! Quote

Super User HoosierHawgs Posted June 27, 2015 Author Super User Posted June 27, 2015 It's all PERSONAL preference. Use what feels right for YOU.I understand this, but I'm looking for a place to start, as this will be my first ever jig/plastic dedicated setup, and I'm looking for something with decent sensitivity. I've never paid more than $50 for a rod, as I mostly buy used. The top end of my range for this rod will be $150. I'm willing to scout around for deals or a used rod if it will get me a better rod I my range. Quote
Diggy Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 The default rod suggestion is usually 7ft m/h for that, plenty that fall into that lure rating. Theres a bunch of $100 dollar rod threads on most of the pages and you can narrow it down. Check dicks sporting goods, they have a clearance sale going at many stores right now. example from search http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/157264-best-do-it-all-baitcasting-rod-under-100/page-2?hl=worm#entry1774283 http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/151806-dobyns-new-contender-for-the-100-rod-catergory/?hl=dollar Quote

Used may get you a "better" higher quality rod but could also cause a lot of heartbreak. Plenty of high quality rods in that range to narrow down. Best advice is to go to local shop and feel for yourself. Some guys like med action up to guys using heavy action rods. Sensitivity is something only YOU can feel for yourself. Too many people worry about what the masses think. 2 Quote
AdamsEye Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 I say sensitivity is key. You want to be able to feel the worm or jig rubbing the inside of the fishes mouth. I like to feel the vibrations, and move a lot of line quickly. That is the one key I see to my worming rod, is how great of a feel I get with braid. Quote
kschultz76 Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 Several good options in your price range. However I think you'll find it difficult to get 1 rod that will handle both 3/16 and 3/4 oz jigs plus trailer. For my that's two different rods. A bit above your price range but close if you get a sale would be the St Croix Avid or Avid X rods. I have personal experience with the Avids and other St Croix rods so happy to recommend them. In general something 7'-7'3" in a fast or xfast action around a MH power should fit the bill, look for something rated 3/8-1 oz or 1/4-1oz. Other popular options but I have no hands on experience with are *** Omens, Daiwa Tatulas, Fenwick Elite Tech and Aetos, Shimano Crucial, and Powell just to name a few. 1 Quote
Super User deep Posted June 27, 2015 Super User Posted June 27, 2015 MH for upto 3/8 oz, and then H. Fast action, 7'6" or longer with a foregrip. Premium fluoro. P.S. I bought my Helium3 for $140. 1 Quote
junyer357 Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 I would reccomend a 7' med heavy with ex fast tip. I also second the st croix avids. Yes at $200 it is over budget but gander mountain is offering $40 mail in rebates on them knocking it down to about $160 for what most agree is a fantastic rod for the money. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted June 27, 2015 Super User Posted June 27, 2015 I only own one rod in the over-$100 range. That's a 7' Falcon Lowrider MH with a mod/F tip. I misuse it for exactly what you're talking about (jigs and T-rigs) because it's crazy sensitive compared to every other rod I own. It's one of those rods that's 20% tip and 80% backbone. Anyway, I tell you this because that line of rods is still being made and the site tells you what each rod in the line is best at. Lots of manufacturers do this. I think Lowriders sell for about $129. I bought mine for $50 from a guy I worked with who was getting out of bassing altogether. He was getting into custom motorcycles. http://falconrods.com/lowrider20.html Quote
kschultz76 Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Op go check out the Flea Market. There's a used Avid MH/F there in your price range, and a great deal on a brand new Shimano Crucial in your price range. Quote
Ozark_Basser Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 I like a 7-8 foot heavy power rod for jigs. 7 foot from the bank or around cover. 8 foot for deep water jigging. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted June 28, 2015 Super User Posted June 28, 2015 It may sound funny to you but flipping and pitching are what I use longer rods for, if I'm casting a 3/8oz finesse jig and dragging it along bottom, I'll often use a 6'6" rod, in fact I have a 6'6" jig rod that I use a good bit and not only to drag finesse jigs but bottom hopping 1/2oz flipping style jigs. I like it because if I'm not pitching to targets then I'm casting to them which means I'm not actually far from the target, in clearer water when it isn't good to get too close, that is when the 6'6" MH-F comes out, it allows me to make a roll cast with greater distance than pitching but still get a somewhat soft entry into the water. Now, that maybe a little short but a 6'8" to 7' range would be ideal for a casting jig rod. Quote
Allen Der Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Cabelas has the St Croix Rage 7ft MH on sale for $115. same blank as the Avid, with different handle and guides (and made in Mexico). I have 4 Rage rods and love them. I also have 2 Premiers that are nice as well (made in USA). http://www.cabelas.com/product/St-Croix-Rage-Casting-Rod/1253428.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch%2F%3FN%3D5100297%26Ne%3D5100297%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Drage%26Ntx%3Dmode%252Bmatchallpartial%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts%26WTz_st%3DSearchRefinements%26form_state%3DsearchForm%26search%3Drage%26searchTypeByFilter%3DAllProducts%26x%3D10%26y%3D6&Ntt=rage 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted June 28, 2015 Super User Posted June 28, 2015 I use custom rods today for both jigs & worms, 6'10" 5 power for worms and 6 power for jigs, PM for specific details. Tom Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted June 28, 2015 Super User Posted June 28, 2015 See if you can take the reel you will be using to the store where you will be buying the rod from, and try the reel out on different rods. That will give you an idea of how the total rig will feel. Quote

Not a huge fan of the handle, but I will say it is an option. Would that be a good rod for jigs/plastics? Quote
kschultz76 Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 I'd really consider finding a sale on the Avid or Avid X over getting the Rage. I'm sure you could make do with the Rage, but in general quality on the Avids is better, and while the graphite used is the same they are not identical and come out of different factories. The minimal increase in price is worth the better quality build and better quality guides in my opinion, and cork grips. TW typically runs a sale for 10-20% off for 4th of July. Gander Mtn also has a $40 rebate on St Croix rods btw 180-239. Quote
Super User HoosierHawgs Posted June 30, 2015 Author Super User Posted June 30, 2015 Does anybody have experience with the Johnny Morris Signature Series Rod? I have an older Extreme and really like it, so I thought another BPS rod might be a good option. Quote
Allen Der Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Does anybody have experience with the Johnny Morris Signature Series Rod? I have an older Extreme and really like it, so I thought another BPS rod might be a good option. I have a JMSS II casting rod with an EVA split grip. the current one looks very similar but they went back to cork grips. I like it, but IMO you should never pay full price for a BPS brand rod. On sale they are a good value and even better value when you do the rod trade in during the spring classic. I think I ended up paying under $90 for mine. 1 Quote

BASSPATROL247 Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 I really like my SR taserra jig/worm rod 7'2" id say mh fast...its a bit stiff for weightless senkos or flukes bit other than that it works for me, the weightless stuff i throw on a SR taserra soinnerbait/worm rod 7'0" id say M and it has a mod- fast action, really whips that light stuff out there good..
