Shanes7614 Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 I would not agree with your perception regarding needing a bass boat to participate or to catch bass. I'm an Old Town Man myself. A-Jay What did you use for your rod holders? Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted June 26, 2015 Super User Posted June 26, 2015 Back in Michigan I had pleasure boat on Lake St Clair at a marina, not designed for fishing but I fished and caught. Moving to an inland lake I bought another pleasure boat, didn't fish with it much as I preferred fishing from a rowboat. Now in Florida I don't do boats for freshwater, don't care to tow or load up a kayak. As far as catching, no doubt in my mind I'd do way better with a boat. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted June 26, 2015 Super User Posted June 26, 2015 Probably more non bass boaters here than are. Quote
CeeJay Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 I tend to be a "romantic" when it comes to the outdoors and angling especially. Hiking trails along the river...looking for good spots, watching the birds, turtles, snakes, etc The solitude of "fishing fine and far away" to quote Charles Cotton. Bank fishing (and now my ventures into shallow wading) brings me peace and quiet and is very soothing, especially out here along the Shenandoah. I'd love to have a canoe, but I doubt I'd use it more than once a week. As far as racing around reservoirs on a bass boat, just not my thing even if I could afford it. I guess I'm a fly angler at heart, but not in technique. (I plan to be buried with my spinning tackle when the time comes, I love spinning so much) Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted June 26, 2015 Super User Posted June 26, 2015 What did you use for your rod holders? Small PVC tubes of an appropriate diameter to accommodate the rods and cut to length. This picture appears in my galley and shows it better. A-Jay http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/gallery/image/6184-june-19th-20137/ Quote
long island basser Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 am i the only one - when i registered on here and started reading posts i felt like if i didn`t have a bass boat i shouldn`t be on here does anyone fish in a canoe - a lot of lakes i go on only allows battery troll motors - tell me i`m not alone I fish in Suffolk county, where I live, and while we do have hundreds of small lakes and ponds ( the largest being 240 acres) there are no gas motors allowed in a single one. I've been fishing strictly out of a boat with trolling motor for over 20 years now. I use my 8 ft bass hunter on solo trips and my 12 ft porta boat when with another. They both are super stable and fish well, getting into every square yard of these small bodies of water. Quote
CrazyFluker Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 I used to fish off the bank for years. I caught my first bass off the shore as the sun set and I could see them when they moved in. I ran a Rapala right past one and he just sat there. I cast out past him again and used a slow retrieve, got caught in a blade of grass and twitched it for a second and watched him hit it. I've been hooked since. Then I got a boat and its a game changer. My lake is a small 108 acre lake that's electric motor only. Now I'm fishing off a 16' Pontoon boat with 2 - 48 thrust Minn Kota rear motors and a Minn Kota Edge 70 thrust foot controller on the front. My sons all fish off the shore when I have a full boat or don't go out and they do pretty well. I struggled for a long time with using the rear motors and then used a 24 thrust on the front that I reversed the head but still had to keep adjusting to the point I felt like I just drove people around so they could fish. There's nothing like fishing off a boat with a foot controller trolling motor. I don't think I could go back to bank fishing, long term anyway. I would go with a jon boat. They're pretty cheap and you can deck them out, put a low thrust cheap foot controlled motor on it and hit it all day almost identical to a bass boat, as far as maneuvering it. A foot controller and depth finder and think it's as sweet as can be for the money. Quote

Super User MIbassyaker Posted June 27, 2015 Super User Posted June 27, 2015 No bass boat for me, either! Bank, wading, canoe, and kayak. Quote
WPCfishing Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 I use to walk the shores with my girl friend. Then we got married and all that suddenly stopped. I suppose I should have found another girl friend..... .. .. . Quote
Neil McCauley Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 I fish a canoe + trolling motor. It's really not much of a disadvantage vs a bassboat once you're at a location. It's only an issue if there is wind or wake from other boats. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted June 27, 2015 Super User Posted June 27, 2015 Ive had two bass boats. Now I have a 22 foot Lowe deck boat because my wife wanted a boat for her to be comfy in. It fishes better than I expected. It actually has the same hull as 22 foot bay boats they make . I added an 80 thrust elec motor to it. I also fish out of a 14 foot flat bottom john boat , a plastic bass Baby and a canoe. I would like to get a nice yak too. I catch a lot of bass in those smaller waters . Quote
