nralover Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 I am sure this is done to death, but perhaps you all will indulge me? I am looking for a low profile, left hand retrieve, general duty casting reel with a budget of 180.00. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted June 25, 2015 Super User Posted June 25, 2015 Quite a few good reels at that price. Do you have any preferences? You are going to get a lot of suggestions for Shimano, Daiwa and Lews reels. I own a Lews Tournament Pro, several Shimanos and a bunch of Daiwas...plus a few other brands. My newest reels are Daiwas, so I can't comment on the new Shimanos and Lews other than to pass along comments I've read from others. At that price (and only considering reels I have used), the Tatula Type R would be near the head of my list. If you could add about $20, I would definitely be looking at the Alphas SV. Quote
John G Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 Shimano Curado 200I for $135.99 tyd on ebay You said General Purpose so this reel is 6.3:1 http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Shimano-Curado-I-201-CU-201I-Left-Hand-6-3-1-Baitcasting-Fishing-Reel-Bass-/361323458562?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item54208e7002 2 Quote
ABW Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 Curado I from ebay, with enough money left over for a spool of line.. and maybe some baits... 1 Quote

John G Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 Lew's Tournament Lite: http://www.lews.com/casting-tournamentlite.php Shimano Scorpion XT 1001: https://japanlureshop.com/shimano-scorpion-xt-1508.html For a general purpose reel, I would take the Shimano Scorpion XT1001 over the Curado I any day of the week. I am disappointed in myself for not thinking of it first. LOL It is already a Classic and Japan Lure Shop probably has the price anywhere on this reel. 1 Quote
Missourifishin Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 Lews Tournament Pro is $200 retail. But last time I checked, they could be found on ebay for around $150. I love my Lews baitcasters. Quote

AdamsEye Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 I feel like I should not say it, but I am new to the forums and might be forgiven? Why not a Revo, I really like mine. That being said I would suggest looking for a good sale right now, and getting the best bang for your buck. You can probably look at reels $50 higher to be safe with the current sales. Now seems like a good time to buy a pricey reel. Quote

Now seems like a good time to buy a pricey reel. Seems like a lot of people were disillusioned with the Gen 3 models. Some don't like the ergonomics of the new reels. Some complain quality isn't as nice as previous models. I've go a couple Gen 1 reels. Wouldn't mind having a couple Gen 2 reels (Premier and STX) as it seems to be the popular consensus that these were the best models. I assume the dual brakes and the heavier drag on the Gen 2 Premier contribute a lot to this opinion. My Gen 1 reels only have magnetic brakes. Haven't used the Premier much, but the STX has been a good reel the past 5 years. I keep it spooled with 40# braid for fishing in slop. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 I've got a Lew's Tournament Lite reel, good reel. I have found them for $139. If you do decide to go that route, let me know and I will send you the website. It does have an outstanding braking system. But, in general what reel feels best in your hands? Has the features you are looking for? Take that approach with searching. Acquire a list from the suggestions above, then spend a good part of that day at a tackle store that cares them all with your rod in hand and put your hands on the reels. For all the reels listed, you are not going to go wrong. The differences and preferences you like will lead you to what you should get. Wdy PS, I recommend a reel with centrifugal braking. Which all above seem to have. Quote
nralover Posted June 25, 2015 Author Posted June 25, 2015 Thanks to all for the opinions! I'll go look at some tomorrow. Quote
masterbass Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 If you could spare a few more dollars, it would be worth it to get the alphas sv. I've owned my fair share of some great reels, but it's hard to beat this reel for the money. Casting machine. Quote
blckshirt98 Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Tackle Warehouse has a lot of Lew's on sale and if you took advantage of the 4th of July sale, the discount applied to sale items even if they were on the exclusion list. I got a few of the Lexa 100's for 50 bucks each. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 8, 2015 Super User Posted July 8, 2015 American Legacy has the Lews Tounament Pro 7.1:1 LH on sale for $140. This is a $200 reel. Not the best for deep crankbaits, but should do the trick for about anything else. I am finding I like the faster ratios although the majority of mine are in the 6s. Bought a Scorpion last winter off a guy who is upgrading all his reels from 6s to 7s, so I'm not the only guy liking faster ratio reels. Quote
