Not sure if this is the right section...

So this is one of those dumb questions, but here goes.  If I have a crankbait I really like but want to get it custom painted can I just buy one and send it to someone and have it painted or does it have to be blank or not painted.

Thanks!

This probably belongs in the Tacklemaking section. As for your question, I've seen custom painted Rapala DT's and Wiggle Warts, so id have to think you should be able to get them painted. They will probably put a base white coat over it first.

Yea. Repainting store bought lures is very common. Takes some sanding to dull the factory clear for something for new pain to stick to. Then primer/basecoat and then paint. Its more expensive this way due to extra step in painting plus cost of lure but you end up with more tried and true lures over a generic knockoff blank.

Take a look at Pizz custom lures, the site has some suggestions.

Get on any of the Facebook fishing groups, or just search Facebook for custom lure painting. There are numerous guys out there who do this. I've had over 50 cranks painted this year alone. I use 2-3 different guys to paint my stuff, just depending on who is busiest or cheapest. I've always just sent them brand new lures and they always come back looking great.

One of my go-to's in a DT10.

Holds up great over time to rocks and fish as well.
