*Hank Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 What's a good freshwater trout rod for under $50? Preferably a 6'6" light. Quote
OntarioFishingGuy Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 Bps microlite glass. The glass is less sensitive, but a lot more fun to fight fish on. They also have a graphite model, but I don't have any experience with it. If you are looking for a sensitive rod it may not be the best option. Quote
wisconsin heat Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 I had the 6'6" MediumLight Berkley Tactix rod, which were designed for trout I believe. i loved it until I broke it :s . I bought a Gander Mountain Vortex rod ( good reviews, I have friends that own multiple and really like them.) And they are on sale for $20. I bought the 6'6" Medium ( don't think it is offered in Light, but it felt like a medium-light to me, reminded me a lot of the tactix) which I intended to use for trout fishing. But I gave it to a close friend who had just broken his only spinning rod before I got to use it. It felt really nice in store, the Vortex's usually run $60, so if there is a gander mountain in your area I would stop by and hold it and get a feel for it. It might be what you are looking for, it might not be, but it is definitely worth checking out. I was in between jobs for a little bit so I still haven't gotten around to replacing my tactix. Probably going to grab another Vortex if they are still on sale when I get a little more wealth haha. Quote

I'm not sure why, maybe it's the neat yellow color, or the fact that it's fiberglass...but I've had my eye on that 7'6" BPS Microlite Glass for a while now. I've never caught a trout in my life, but I'm thinking that rod would be absolutely perfect as a float rod for my panfishing. And for $20...I might just pull the trigger on that rod very soon. The only rods that seem similar would be the Eagle Claw Featherlights which are also yellow, glass, ultralight, and cheap Quote

Panfish are loads of fun on an ultralight glass rod. The fight of the fish is relative to the gear you use, and this really bends when you hook a panfish. I caught a small musky on it a few weeks ago and it fought like crazy. 1 Quote

Well I've decided to go ahead and order one Which model do you have? I'm trying to decide between the 7'6" and the 6'6". I'm thinking the longer model would give me better control of my stick and balsa floats on the river. On the other hand I've always liked 6'6" rods... EDIT- Hey Hank I'm sorry I don't mean to hijack your thread my friend. Quote
OntarioFishingGuy Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 I have a discontinued 5'6, but use it to skip floats under docks and trees. I sort of with I got a longer one, but the shorter length is nice when walking through trees and brushy shorelines. If it is strictly a float rod, a 7'6 would be perfect. If you want to use other lures or fish really small waters, a 6'6 might be a better choice. Either way its a fun rod. 1 Quote

I tend to use floats quite a bit when targeting panfish in current. Hmm I think I'm going to go for the 7'6. Thanks again I'm not quite sure why I used to overlook glass UL rods before. I love to bring out the fighting side of smaller fish...and this BPS glass is going to be tons of fun. Quote
Canyon explorer Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 I bought a Gander Mountain 6'6" Vortex for $16.00 on sale and really like it for trout. Quote

James Pondscum Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 Might be longer then you wanted but my suggestion is. The Gander mountain advantage pro steelhead 10'6" 2-8lb/ 1/16 to 3/8 oz. Bought mine a couple of years back for about forty dollars. My go to trout rod. Flicks lite lures very well. Has also pulled in many bluegill, crappie, bass and a catfish. It is a lite action rod. Rob96 Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 Actually I really like my 5'6" Shakespeare Agility combo. No trout on it yet but the bass have been fun. Quote
