Baseball Getting In The Way Of Bassin'

Between my two boys, we are at baseball 4-5 nights per week.

 

This is really cutting into my bass fishing. I know they will be grown soon and I will miss all of this but

can't we just have 1 game per week, per kid?

 

I am going through withdrawals.

 

Luckily 1 of their seasons ends this week and the other in 2 weeks.

I remember when I was a kid a couple years I started baseball. I wasn't very good. And that was a time my dad wanted to spend weekends at the lake we had a house on. Well, I eventually quit baseball because I wasn't helping the team at all. My dad would usually not want me to quit something I started, but that was just fine with him this time. If I had stuck with baseball it would have eventually ended for me, and pretty soon.But I started a lifelong love affair with fishing that still continues to this day, stronger than ever.

 

The same happened with my daughter. She played tee-ball and softball until it came time for her to move to the infield and take a leadership role. That's when she decided it was not for her and that was just OK.

You should try being a swimmmer! 10 practices a week man! You just have to make time for fishing, sometimes that means taking a weekend off and maybe letting mom deal with it?

A friend has two children in sports year round and wife that works a schedule almost opposite of his. Between practices, games, team functions and work/school schedules he has about 1-2 days a month to fish. Even then its a roll of the dice as to what the weather conditions will be like.

I have a friend like that too. Their sports and activities overlap. He owns a pond and I fish it more often than he does.

The only time I remember baseball interfering with fishing, I was 14 years old.
My father and I were trout fishing in Rahway River, New Jersey.

Dad parked the car alongside the stream, blasted the car radio and left the car door wide open.

While fishing, we were listening to the 1956 World Series between the New York Yankees (American League)

and the Brooklyn Dodgers (National League). We got very lucky, because that day Don Larsen pitched

the only 'no-hitter' in a World Series, it's never been repeated.

 

Since that time though, I've virtually replaced spectator sports with participant sports,

and now fishing, hiking, stargazing and wildlife photography rule the roost.

At first I thought you meant you could not stop watching that stupid sport.

But I see you are supporting your kid's.

That comes first, support your children and spend all the time you can with them.

Fishing can come later.

My daughter is 26 and her birthday falls on the opening of Pike season.

I missed a few of those parties and she never let me forget.

I spent many years with my daughters and soccer.

Now they are gone and I call it " Scott time "

They live in opposite ends of the country and I don't get to see them very much.

One in Alaska and one in Flotida.

Next month the wife and I are meeting my Florida daughter in Chicago and all flying to Alaska for 8 days.

Fishing can wait.

I helped coach my oldest boy all through Cal Ripken and Babe Ruth ball. Then came HS ball and now he enters college this fall and hopefully will play ball for Thomas College. Sure it cut into fishing time but I wouldn't change a thing. Baseball has helped him in many many ways to become more confident and will be a background focus in college. Nothing, and I mean nothing will keep me away from that field for his first college game. I've always been there for him and always will.

I gave up football after one season once I was old enough to drive, cut into my fishing and deer hunting time way too much.

I know the feeling. My boy plays year 'round. We are gone more weekends at tournaments than we are home. Now my youngest girl is on a travel team...

That's the reason I don't have a "real" boat. I would never have time to use it.

I get the fishing in when I can.

In Connecticut, young boys who are bored of baseball in the spring play lacrosse. I've been playing for many years, probably since I was 6 or 7, and until I finished high school it was a year round affair. Since I chose to go to a d1 school, and am not quite good enough to play on the varsity team, I am playing for the club team which is only 2.5 months in the spring. I'm pretty relieved to have all fall to fish.

Going into my freshman year of highschool, I really wanted to play football.during that summer football players were required to be in the weight room 5 days a week and that wasn't gonna fly because this was the moment in my life where the passion for bass fishing turned into obsession. I ran track 4 years until my senior year, I wasn't having as much fun with it anymore and I decided to quit. I was feeling a bit overwhelmed at the time and quitting freed up some time for me to relax. (bass weren't even in season yet, though it was close, and I was super stressed about me not having everything ready haha)

LAX is becoming quite popular here in Indy. Avon Bay Lacrosse is quite the spectacle to watch.
