Yeah, an inexpensive reel may not be worth the cost of cleaning plus shipping both ways.  You can almost pick up another reel for what it costs.  Sometimes the Mettle can be had for about $40 during the Reel Riot sale.  Probably would be a better reel.  At least they get great reviews.

I should learn to clean my own, but 1) I hate tinkering. 2) No place where I live to set-up for it, and 3) I would be ticked at myself if I did something wrong and the reel didn't work right.

It is easier to send it out.  I try never to have just one reel worked on.  That spreads the cost of shipping among several reels.

I was actually really considering the Mettle. I figured the Shimano would be better so I went with it. If I could get some more input from people who've used both and most reviews favor the Mettle then I may go exchange it.

The Caenan is pretty smooth after you break it in with about three or four full days on the water. I've caught some nice 6-7 lb bass on mine and it keeps chuggin along.

Have you had any problems out of it?

Nope. I mean, it has plastic friggin gears man. It's eventually gonna pee its pants. But have I gotten my $90 out of it? Ab-so-freakin-lutely. When it fails, I will post a thread on its demise. But hell, that could be in five or ten years! It's not like it's my only reel!

I can't afford good gear. I don't know nothing about durable gears. Lol and it is my only reel.

Not getting another reel. If I take it back I'm going to get a sight for my rifle or just keep my money.

Return the lesser reel and look for a better quality used reel for the same amount of money. Shiny and new doesn't mean better.

How much did you pay for that reel?

$76 something after tax.

Another 5.5lb (or 6?) Largemouth on the junky Shimano Caenan:

You're making me look bad, man. I haven't even taken mine out to the water yet. Lol

I've had mine for a few years, so I have a little bit of a head start. I usually stop fishing in August to concentrate on getting ready for the upcoming deer season. You could use that time to catch up?

I don't fish much anyways. I have other hobbies that I enjoy more. Fishing is more of just when I'm wanting to relax.

Me too! I only get to fish about once every other week. I'm doing my best to get my three year old to jump on the bandwagon. There was a time that I would go three times a week, sometimes more. But working 45-50 hours a week and my wife working a full time job and two young ones can cut into hobby time some. Oh well, I guess that makes the fish that I do catch all the more sweet! Have a good one.

True that! Lol I have motocross, but right now I'm trying to find another bike.

I can only imagine what sort of sweet rods and reels I could have for the price of a couple dirt bikes! We love what we love, or, as they say, the heart wants what the heart wants.

I have noticed this reel is very noisy. Does that mean the bearings are packed in grease or is it good to go?
