Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 20, 2015 Global Moderator Posted June 20, 2015 That's a sweet looking gar! I've seen albino longnose before, but never solid black. Quote

Turtle135 Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 Nice gar! I've never seen one that dark before. I had a fun day with them a few weeks back (they kept chopping the soft plastics off my swim jigs). I don't know how they ever manage to eat anything cause they always whiff on my lures. Quote

When they grab something, those teeth do NOT let it get away. They just work it down towards their mouth, get the fish headfirst, and gulp! Main issue withthe artificials is that they can't really be hooked in the mouth, you have to let them swallow it so bait is the only way I have been getting them. The fish around here are way too smart to chase one of those rope lures. Quote

I don't think I've ever seen a gar that wouldn't chase anything I threw at it, unless they're just surfacing to breathe. If I see one laying still or cruising I can get at least a follow 100% of the time. Quote

I always hear about how aggressive they are, but the ones we have here are pretty smart. You have to make a stealthy approach, and a long cast way past them with a very good presentation (very small strike zone) to get them to eat. The fish I was catching when I caught the black one wouldn't eat a strip of cut bait but if you could get a bluegill about 3" long, kill it, and pop the swim bladder so it would sink, they would eat that if you twitched it right up to their nose and let it fall. The only baits I have gotten gar to bite are hard jerkbaits, an s-waver 168, and last year I hooked a giant on my 6" bull shad but he threw it. One of my biggest curiosities is what would happen if I made "feathered" trebles on my s-waver but use the nylon rope that gar get their teeth stuck in. Quote

Nope they don't want anything I've been trying to get one on the fly I see them daily when I stop at the river always popping on the surface I assume for bugs and small minnows. I've never got one to chase and maybe a few times wen I put a fluke jr on their nose they will bite then spit out instantly. Quote

If you can find them laying still around cover or just below the surface, those fish are the ones that you should be able to get to bite I would think. Quote
