Maybe he was mean and insensitive about others sensitivities

You could be refering to me..or yourself...or both.

Well, according to Wiki it was to improve accuracy of Union troops as they were inferior to the average Confederate soldier. If that's not the case, I want to know.

Almost correct.

I'd get into the truth, but Glenn has already warned us.  Let's just say that I hope you made your latest "urgent donation"!

There is little point in fretting about where the world is heading.

Recently, some scientists declared that the human race, as we know it, will be extinct within a hundred years.

I think it's sad that for the most part the news only reports the bad in this country. Your always going to have bad things happen no matter what you do. Reporting events like this only gives the gun man a name and ideas to others like him. Maybe if they just reported good things that happen it would give somebody an idea. One thing my wife and I like to do is travel. And we have done some traveling and not just in this country but many others. There's a ton of nice people out there that will take their shirts off their backs to help you. I try to stay focused  on them. As far as SC I have been there several times and have nothing but good to say about the people that live there. This bad event is not going to change my mind any.

I don't think any of us realize the world really hasn't gotten worse, ots just now all at our fingertips. News comes at a touch of a button, rather than hearing it days later. The news reports all the "bad" to keep their ratings up, because no one would watch the news if their wasn't anything to be reported. For crying out loud, I live in a state where Martinsville Highschool was paid for by the KKK! Segregation, the mob, the depression. People keep saying this is the worst time to be alive, but that is far from the truth.

Those are all US issues. But have you seen the Middle East recently? It's a mess over there.

And, contrary to what the news media would have you believe, violent and gun crimes in the US are way down. I guess this one got to me because it's in my home state and just so unacceptable. I know it could have happened with another weapon. I'm certainly a 2nd Amendment (as well as all the others) supporter.

People in the middle east have been throwing rocks at each other since rocks were placed on the ground.

Good example of bad history here. I'd go deeper, but I love and adhere to the forum rules.

I can tell you to brush up on your history, maybe take a nice Middle Eastern History course at the local college. Knowledge is power!

I'm 16 and already have 2 semesters of college history credit. I think I've got a decent idea. Assyrians weren't exactly the most peaceful people.

Well, heck, no one was in those days.

Related for everyone, there's a super interesting Ted Talk by Dr. Steven Pinker called The Surprising Decline of Violence. It'll make you feel a lot better about modern society.

Please provide a time frame when the Middle East wasn't in turmoil. Knowledge is power, wisdom is greater and understanding is divine.

Does anyone remember what the stated purpose of the NRA was when it was originally formed?

It went from: "A chicken in every pot" TO "A handgun in every glove box" (may not be verbatim et literatum)

Like I said, forum rules. So why don't we agree to disagree and leave it there?

I watch Ted Talks on a weekly basis. I'll check it out tommorow after my workkout.

Went ahead and watched it because why not! :) Also, it was quite interesting. There's definitely some logical jumps made, that I wouldn't have thought up on my own. Thank you for the recommendation.

I'm not trying to bait you into a political discussion or religious one either. All I'm asking for is a timeframe, like say from 225BC thru 52BC (arbitrary dates btw). Providing a date will not violate forum rules, or just pm me a timeframe. History was my minor in college and I'm genuinely curious. After all "those who fail to learn from history are destined to repeat it."

I don't really think you can have a seriuos discussion about the human condition without religion and politics being at the center. I am also not sure that humans are any more violent or corrupt now than we ever were. There are certainly more of us, and a global awareness of how messed up we are though. It is easy to come to the conclusion that we are without hope. I don't believe that, but to go any further would violate forum rues...

When I began my quest to become a certified weapons instructor, the goal was to promote safe weapons handling and marksmanship.  By the time I left them, the organization's goal was to skin as much cash out of the wallets of its most gullible members to enhance the payroll of a lobbyist firm.

I don't think it is so much that the human species hasn't always been somewhat violent, as it is the despair to realize that we probably will never rise above it!

I think its less about religions, politics, and everything else. Its about simply having an understanding for the world around us. We are all people. While we may not have the same ethnic backgrounds, vultures, values, ECT... We still need to realize we are all human and should treat each other as such with respect and dignity.

We are also coming into an age where things like slavery, mass murder, etc. are now considered by most humans to be completely barbaric. The ideals of our country's founding run counter to barbarism. Yet it continues and there is a faction in this world that finds it acceptable. America has spent some time rising above it. Enough so that we can still find it shocking.

I'm sorry everyone, but stuff like this really irks me. Post on a public forum that the historical record is wrong then bail. Younger ppl fall prey to this crap revisionist historians claim to reveal the truth (rarely do they), instead they are promoting a humanist world view. This elitist attitude that they are the truth bearers and the test of us are either to ignorant or stupid to understand, hiding behind in this case "Forum rules"? All I want is a timeframe, it's easy civil war 1861-1865, WWI 1914-1918, WWII 1939-1945. If I have to go into either a religious or political discussion why these dates are not accurate then I'm revising the historical record, in short lying.
