5 Dollar Fishing Game Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 Today through Sunday I am doing the three day NC inshore fishing trip with my family. It is for Father's Day / my 12 year wedding anniversary vacation. We will be in the vicinity of blues, tarpon, mackerel, reds, drums, and even sharks! I'm pumped. So the guide said it is similar use of lures like bass fishing being that some waters are only a few feet deep. My two concerns are that I don't know how to hold these fish and I also don't know if I need to set the hook when they hit???? Also, we will be out for 8 hours on the boat. How many fish would we catch each theoretically this time of the year in coastal NC? Me, dad, brother-in-law and father-in-law. Air temps are high 80's and sunny skies the three days. Quote
Super User fishinfiend Posted June 19, 2015 Super User Posted June 19, 2015 Bring a pair of grippers. Most have teeth and the ones that don't can still scrape your hand up. Yes set the hook. On tarpon they have a very bony mouth so you really have to stick them hard. No way to theorize how many you catch. You could load the boat if you find a school or you might not get a bite all day. Have a great time! Quote
5 Dollar Fishing Game Posted June 19, 2015 Author Posted June 19, 2015 Thanks for the tips! The best thing I will go on is that my wife's co worker went on the same charter two weeks ago. Same 8 hour trip. She said her and her family caught so many fish in 8 hours they all took ibuprofen as soon as they hit the condo that night lol Quote
Sea NaCl Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 In coastal NC its always a hit or miss. As far as setting the hook goes I would just ask the guide while your running to a spot or at the dock. This time of year the blues and mackerel are offshore while the red drum are inshore. If you want to go for quantity target the blues and mackerel if you want to catch quality go for the reds. Blues and mackerel are great fun on light tackle, trolling, not so much. I'm sorry to tell you this but you will not be seeing any Tarpon this time of the year in NC. Have fun and good luck! Quote
5 Dollar Fishing Game Posted June 19, 2015 Author Posted June 19, 2015 Good deal sea salt!! I'll save the tarpon for the next episode of river monsters!!!!!! Quote
