A young lady at work told me that yesterday because I told her to do her job. My response to her was "I'm not mean, I'm honest" to which she replied "I'm overly sensitive" to which I responded "I guess you have a problem then" and I walked away.

I told this story to my ol' lady yesterday and without even a pause she said "You are mean" and her daughter agreed. A little backs story: We do not got out to eat except our regular date night restaurant. We used to go out but my honesty has embarrassed the wife on more than one occasion. Yesterday was my daughters birthday so we went to her restaurant of choice. The wife has a new strategy. She warned the waitress about me as soon as we sat down. The waitress responded saying it's ok she has thick skin. This was not the case when we went out for either mothers day or the ol' ladys b-day I had the waitress in tears after she messed up the order. She apologized and I told her not to worry, I'll just take it out of her tip. Well, we can't go there anymore....  It seems her new strategy worked. Last night went off without a hitch.

Back to the point I was trying to make. What has happened to our society? Or have I been in the blind for so long, working in the trades, that I missed this whole thing called the corporate world. Why is everybody so dam sensitive? My company needs the trades people to succeed. They have moved us away from the rest of the "corporate world" employees so we don't offend anyone. I have already been told I need to handle my fellow employees with kid gloves and there is an over/under going on, about how long it will take me to lose my job(I think it's quite entertaining). Gone are the days of "Get the F off my jobsite"  The only thing I can attribute it to is lawsuits. Why else would companies put up with poorly performing employees and just assume others will pick up the pieces. If you F up, learn from it and move on. If you don't learn, don't let the door hit ya on the way out.

Rant over

Being a good boss, worker, husband, father, or human being is not easy work. There are times when brutal honesty is needed. There are times when tact and sensitivity are required. Using a hammer when another tool is needed is not effective and sometimes is just destructive...

I don't disagree. But We can't just go thru life coddling everyone and telling them everything is ok. At some point in time people need to take responsibility AND be held responsible for their actions or inactions. I did see ineptness in the trades and that was mostly shops gambling on cheap help. It happens in both union and non union shops. What I see hear is just plain disregard  for doing what they were hired to do. These kids get paid pretty well right out of college. Most of them don't earn it, if that makes sense, and even fewer can think for themselves. I would think a prerequisite of being in "operations" would be someone who can think for themselves and not afraid to make decisions.

Maybe it's the education system not preparing them for the real world OR maybe the real world is just changing and I'm some grouchy old dinosaur who is soon to be extinct.

Parents spoil there kids and don't correct them when they mess up. And when someone else corrects them they for some reason take it personal.

Yep, it's everyone else's fault! Can't be my fault! I'd rather sit and complain than try and change things via positive action.

I am union. What's your point? We do our job and get it done in a professional manner. Unless yout were being supportive. In which case I am sorry if I may have offended you and offer you my ever humblest of apologies. Please allow me to express how terrible I feel that I may have misinterpreted your statement. I fear I may not be able to sleep tonight or properly do my job if I accidentally misinterpreted your statement. I am so ashamed. I am prepared to atone for my disgrace by either lashing myself with a cat of nine tails while genuflecting Or by Hari Kari, if you prefer.

I agree Slone. Too many think just showing up is enough. It is the attitude that the world owes them that really offends me. I think you are right that the world has changed-and not for the better.

So what did you say to the waitress to make her cry.

I said it before we got the food and the wifes son son brought up the kitchen scene in the movie Waiting. The youtube clip is not BR friendly otherwise I'd post it. They were all worried the waitress would take "extra care" of our order

I know what you mean.

There are those union jobs out there where their requirement is to push a specific button or only to shovel, they won't push another button or use a rake because it exceeds their qualifications.

There is a very real chance of being fired. I'm in a "construction trade" union. They operate a bit different then manufacturing unions and what not. To put it in perspective. You get drug tested upon hiring onto a job and then randomly throughout the job. As per the PHMA, Power House Maintenance Agreement, you are allowed 3 unexcused tardies or absences during a 90 day period with one additional for each thirty days after the original 90. This is just an example and my numbers may be slightly off. Once number 4 is reached you are terminated. Which is also up to contractors discretion as well. The Labor Brokers don't play around with it. Hit that fourth strike and you are out the gate. Which also includes a 90 to 120 day ban from all power house property in the southern US, minus TVA.

If you loaf about and don't do your job they will fire you. The union won't back you if you are in the wrong.

I am not hijacking this thread with regards to unions. If anyone would like to discuss that with me then pm me.

You are pretty mean by the way. I mean you step on Deak's heart in my thread. Then you make a waitress cry. Then you don't coddle your Co workers or subordinates. Sheesh what a jerk. I guess you can take the Pipe Fighter out of the trade, but you can't take the trade out of the pipe fighter.

Until you get chased out of and banned from establishment for:

A. Mocking the proprietor

B. Verbal bashing of another diner

C. Throwing a cheese burger and large drink at the worthless person cooking your food in a McDonalds.

D. Flinging a burrito at a fellow diner for refusing to watch his thug mouth in front of your 5 year old.

Then and only then will you fully achieve my level of crassness.

Speaking of. Would you and the ol' lady care to go out to eat with myself and my ol' lady sometime?

The struggle is real. Don't you hate it when you get talked to because you hurt a rapist/murder's feelings because you were mean to them? Anyone? Just me?

I could make compelling arguments on several sides of interactions in the workplace as well as away from it.   Most of it would be nothing but pure babble, being a salesman I know how to do that...........lol.

I'm not the most tolerant person, age along with maturity has altered that somewhat.  When I'm dealing with a clerk, restaurant server, gas station attendant or whatever, many are doing what they are doing because they can't do any thing else.  Telling them how I would do it usually goes on deaf ears and reprimanding them should be done by their manager, not me.  If I have a beef I'll go to the manager.  It doesn't pay for me to get upset, or upset at some else and look like a jerk.

One thing really bothers me, although it isn't my place to say anything.  Going into the market, drug store, etc., as the clerk is ringing up the order the customer is babbling away on their cell phone.  I see that as total disrespect.  Phone call can't wait a few seconds, if it's that important I'm not even in the store, I'm talking in private.  Phone rings while I'm there, I either don't answer or tell the caller I call back in 5 minutes.

I'm surprised her mommy didn't show up to protect her.

I can remember when parents would say that they would be happy if their children had it better than they did.  Back then, this meant that their children had the chance for better paying jobs, better homes, and in general a healthier happier life.  Parents taught their children what it took to succeed, to respect others, and that there were consequences when you goofed up.

Somewhere along the line, those goals have morphed into today's helicopter parents whose only goal is to make sure that Little Johnny or Mary Jane gets whatever they want.  Heaven forbid that their child is punished by a teacher at school, is left off the starting lineup of whatever sport they aren't really good at, or anyone else who expects their babies to live up to anyone else's expectations.

All these things are true. (bluebasser's being a little different situation as a lot of his subjugated are or will be in hand cuffs). But, as a manager (and maybe a father) part of the challenge is getting the most out of your employees. If you're expecting everyone to bend to how you want it, then everybody's going to end up frustrated. Better managers tend to be more willows than oaks.

I have no idea where Raider's going with any of this.

In today's PC society is it better to turn your back on things that are wrong and walk away or say nothing than engage the issue?

Depends on the situation. Sometimes yes and sometimes no.

99% of workers in the USA do a good job and do their best.  It is the very few that cause problems and get irritated at the drop of a hat. Seems these people are looking for a fight and will engage in bad behavior just to cause a reaction. These types are to be avoided on the water, at work and all other situations.

And for management to support you is a thing of the past as the managers do now want to get into trouble with their superiors so they avoid the issue; refuse to address it; sweep it under the rug; or support the individual in the wrong.

So we allow slackers to do very little; we do not confront poor service; and we avoid getting into a adversarial position with anyone.

If you speak the truth be ready for the consequences in today's society.

I realize America needs waitstaff and cashiers. I tend to think out loud and that waitress still got a 20% tip.

Im of the school that you do the job you were hired for or we'll get someone who will. I've also worked alone for longer than these kids have been alive. Dont gete wrong, there are a few that are on point. The majority are just bodies doing time.
