CarpKing Posted June 18, 2015 Posted June 18, 2015 I am in the market for a decent reel and was hoping to get a few suggestions from those more experienced, as I am not very experienced. I am looking for a reel that has an aluminum body, brass gears, around 6.4:1 ratio, quality bearings and a magnetic brake. I came across the Lew's SSG1H that has these features, but was wanting to spend a few dollars less than what I am finding the Lew's SSG1H reels for ($85.) Can anyone suggest something comparable that sales for a few dollars less? Thanks for any help. Quote
masterbass Posted June 18, 2015 Posted June 18, 2015 Check out the daiwa lexa on sale at TW for $69. This is a $130 reel originally with brass gears, 6.3 ratio (lefty which is what I recommend for newbies) and built like a tank. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted June 18, 2015 Super User Posted June 18, 2015 for what you want and what you are willing to spend your options are very limited. Get the Daiwa lexa that is being heavily discounted. Quote
CarpKing Posted June 18, 2015 Author Posted June 18, 2015 Thanks for the suggestions guys. the Daiwa seems to have everything I was looking for, so I grabbed one. 3 Quote
*Hank Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 Another vote for Daiwa they have good reels for cheap, I would recommend the Lexa for $69- normally $140- Great deal for sure! Quote

tnt2671 Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 the lexas and new gen excellers are awesome reels for the money and very user friendly , great choice!! Quote
bass1980 Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 The Lexa at $140 was seriously over priced. The price right now, it's a good buy. If you're fishing around weeds I highly suggest adding some carbontex drag washers. They have a weak drag system. Quote

CarpKing Posted June 19, 2015 Author Posted June 19, 2015 Got the Lexa 100HL. I will have to adjust to the left-hand reeling, but that shouldn't be a problem. Will checkout the carbontex washers. 1 Quote
CarpKing Posted June 19, 2015 Author Posted June 19, 2015 Appreciate the help everyone. I am sure this Daiwa will be light years from the 33 and 733 from the '80s that I am using now. Can't wait to feel how smooth it reels relatively speaking. Quote
CarpKing Posted July 16, 2015 Author Posted July 16, 2015 Thought I would post an update. I have fished this reel for about 12 hours now off my yak and REALLY like it. I especially like that it is LH, despite being right handed. On 10 my 9 year-old can work it pretty well. The only thing I wish I could improve would be it's ability to work with my featherweight lures. Can whip a 1/2oz frog almost across the lake though. Thanks once again for the suggestions on this reel. Quote
