I've never dressed up a reel before with custom parts. Are the tdz's custom parts also compatible with a fuego? Are most daiwa custom parts compatible?

Some are, some aren't.

Go to Hedgehog studios or call Brian at the TackleTrap.

The basics most do:

TDZ100m spool

some sort of 90mm CF handle

worm/drive bushing to bearings

knobs with 2 BB per handle

Carbontex drag

Drag Star

everything after that is purely cosmetic

Will exchanging the parts make it lighter?

A carbon fiber handle will lighten it a little. I put a zillion swept drag star and handle on mine. I believe the Tatula drag star fits and that would be lighter. I put the TD-Z 100m spool on mine and it's great but that spool is no longer made so EBay would be your best bet. You can get a Hyper long cast spool that will fit. I love mine after tricking it out, just keep in mind that you can buy a nice reel for what you spend on the Fuegoyou will be able to lighten it a little but not enough to make a big difference .

Not really. your largest upgrades to reduce weight are going to be the handle/knobs and spool. The difference will be grams not ounces.  you can go for the Ize Pe long cast spool and get a small carbon fiber handle with tiny knobs and the reduction will be greater but not totally noticeable. anything else is purely cosmetic,

The I'ze spools are going to be hard to come by as well, unfortunately. It's possible that there will be an SV spool introduced for the Zillion frame, which would be a sweet addition assuming that it's not bright orange.

I'd look at Zillion Type R drag stars. They're good lookin' and only about $20.

Functional upgrades

Spool swap

Carbontex drag

Bearings - they don't do much though

Handle - it's more cosmetic to me, but I prefer 90mm handles .The tatula handle is a cheap solution for me. It's 90mm and runs you $20

Cosmetic upgrades

Anodized parts - Hedgehog Studios

Drag star - can be needed to swap handles

Cast control cap

Line guide

Carbon handle - they don't always save weight

Knobs - ZPI RCS

Custom paint

Not really. That truth is that personally, other than the Carbontex drag pad upgrade I would´t spend much money trying to upgrade a reel like a Fuego, when you are done upgrading you could have purchased a used TDZ ( and still have an extra buck left ) that practically has all the upgrades you added to a Fuego and it will still be a couple of ounces lighter.

Thanks everyone for the help so far. I guess the main thing I want to do is get a swept handle. I guess I would need a swept drag star too. Cork knobs wouldn't be too bad either haha.

Tatula handle and drag star, carbontex drag and if your gonna pitch a lot put Boca Lightning bearings in it. Grand total around $70. Very true about getting a Z. I just got one for $130 near mint with a Zillion type R drag and Avail handle. Love my Fuego but it can't touch the Z

Never seen one that low.  Know of any more?  :eyebrows:

OP.  I think the Fuego is a fine reel as is.  Many feel the drag could use a little help.  TT tested the drag at 5.4 lbs.  Not much compared to the 20 lb. plus of some of today's reels.  Not sure how much a Carbotex drag adds.  I've got one of each, but no good way to test them.  Factory drag seems sufficient.  I don't use my Fuegos to pull fish out of heavy slop.  People love the Pixy, and it has a lot less drag pressure.  When I was looking into the possibility of getting one, I was told factory drag pressure was only 3 pounds.  Doesn't seem to bother many as the Pixy is a very popular reel.

I should have grabbed a 100m spool when they were still available....just for the heck of it.  I have to admit the looks of the Fuego endears it to me.  The Sol is a highly desired reel, but I like my Fuegos better.  Its looks may be the difference.  :teeth:

Auction site score. $76 plus $19 shipping. Won and paid for it Sunday night about 9:30. Was in my hands by 1pm today. Talk about service!

Fuego 6:3:1 gear set was ordered Monday from Daiwa. Along with some other things for it. I had a spare Steez 100 spool laying around since I put an SV spool in mine. Should make a nice little reel. Plans to get it painted sometime soon.
