Super User fishinfiend Posted June 18, 2015 Super User Posted June 18, 2015 I just spent 2 weeks in the Florida Keys and got to do some fishing. I didn't catch many, but I had a great time with my Dad. Few things top spending quality time with Pops doing what we both love. The canal we stayed on was loaded with grouper. I caught a few and each one i caught had several others following them up. These things pull like CRAZY. At first I tried to use my bass rod to land one, but that was an exercise in futility as they are just too tough and the area was to small to allow a fight before they got into holes in the sea wall and broke off or wrapped around pilings. Here are the ones i caught. As awesome as these fish are, I still like bass fishing more. lol 1 Quote
Super User everythingthatswims Posted June 18, 2015 Super User Posted June 18, 2015 That is crazy, I didn't think that gags were supposed to be shallow in the summer. I have seen where people can catch them fishing docks in Florida, but only in the winter. Very nice fish! (and top notch table fare) Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted June 19, 2015 Super User Posted June 19, 2015 I'm not a grouper expert at first I thought it was a gag, I'm not so sure the markings don't appear to be quite the same. The one's I've caught have been offshore over reefs, black grouper too. A must is knowing the species, some may be legal and some not. Nice groupers none the less and they do put up a very respectable fight. Given the water they were caught from, catching them on bass gear would be a ball. Offshore in 80 fow, no. Quote
Super User fishinfiend Posted June 19, 2015 Author Super User Posted June 19, 2015 You may be right, it could be a black grouper. They do look similar. I tossed it back anyways. Quote
atcoha Posted June 20, 2015 Posted June 20, 2015 Nice. Keys canals hold just about everything, you never know what you are going to pull up! Did you get a chance to chase any tarpon? Quote
Super User fishinfiend Posted June 21, 2015 Author Super User Posted June 21, 2015 no tarpon catching, but i saw one in the canal that was easily 150 I also went to that place Robbies where you hand feed the tarpon and have a nice battle scar from one lol Here is what it is like there…. (not my video) Quote
