Galyan's Rods

Just bought a Galyan's 6'6" Medium Heavy (feels like a medium)rod at Tackle Service center here in Indy. I took a look at the reel seat, and it looks about the same as a Shimano Carbomax I own. Does anybody know who made the Galyan's rods?

It was probably Pure Fishing but Galyans was bought out by Dicks in 2004.  That rod had to be made prior to that year.  Galyans base rods were comparable to the Tourney Special from BPS.  I believe it was around $40-$50 rod but was often on sale for $30.

I have had a Galyan rod, an upper level rod I believe, for many years.  I got it as part of a combo, I think.  I always liked the blank (nice medium brown color) but hated the ugly grey guide rings and the grip/reel seat.  I rebuilt the rod to my liking and love it.  It feels almost the same as my St Croix SCV70MF, level 5 , 7 foot, medium power, fast action.

Here are some pics of the Galyan's (Graphite IM8 Performance Series) and the Shimano Carbomax side by side. I just find it funny they are so similar (why I bought it). It looks like they could be the same rod with a different butt cap and a 6 inch length difference.

I used to work for Galyan's, and while I didn't care for their newer IM8 line of rods, they had an IM7 Performance Series rod that sold for $40 that I'd rate as one of the best moving bait rods ever built for the money. I thought they were so good I bought 8 of them back in the early 2000s when they clearanced them out ($20) for the new models.  The newer models were fast action and higher graphite content, while the older models were more moderate with lower modulus graphite. To this day I still have all 8 rods and they have never had a single issue over all those years, and they have literally caught thousands of bass over that time frame, and made thousands of more casts beyond that.

 

We were always under the impression that the older models were made by St. Croix, and at the time, they did mimic the Premiere line of rods rather nicely. Can't say who might have made the newer versions, which looks like the one you posted. I've reads that the Carbomax line of rods was introduced in 2005, and the newer line of Galyan's rods came out around 2001/2002, well before the Carbomax if that is the case. Actually, Galyan's was bought out back in 2004, which also preceded the Carbomax lineup.

Ok, thanks for the info! Good read. My only problem with the Carbomax is a 7' can be kinda a hassle from tight spots on the bank, figured this would make a good replacement until I get into a Yak here soon I really liked the feel of it. Plan on using it for liplless cranks or squarebill cranks.

I didn't say I thought it was built by St Croix, I said it performs like a St Croix SCV.  I don't remember when I bought it.  I'll try to change my personal pic to show what it looks like now.

My rod is a Galyan Performance Series HMG 54.  The power is described on the decal as med-light, and the CCS numbers confirm it is less powerful than the St Croix I mentioned, and not quite as fast.  It feels closer to the St Croix than the CCS numbers would indicate.  It is a little heavier than the St Croix, also.  A nice rod, but not a St Croix SCV.
