Shanes7614 Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 There are a few places I've found with some deeper water in between these lakes and one deep water section in Ida itself. My question is... I'm ASSuming these areas should be holding plenty of fish and a few biguns at that. He one area is 35 FOW. The other is 18 FOW and both areas loaded with bait LMB peacock bass and sunshine bass as well. I'm looking to target mostly the LMB. Wha types of lures/baits would you be using to reach these bigger deeper fish? Quote
bocaLMBhunter Posted June 18, 2015 Posted June 18, 2015 I would suggest dragging a big worm along the bottom,bouncing a jig, or a deep diving crank or lipless crank. Takes time to get that bite down deep. Look for structure on bottom with your depth finder and make long casts. Quote

I was trying to tune my Lowrance side scan unit so I'd troll around for a few hours. Even on really cold days you could catch peacocks, LM and sunshine bass with lures worked around 6 feet deep. Shallow running baits didn't work as well and deeper baits just dredged up snot from the bottom. I thought about dragging a carolina rig but again that snot is nasty stuff. I can't say that I have done much offshore or ledge fishing there in the summer. We did find decent concentrations of bait in Lake Osborne 3 weeks ago and did catch a few small ones out deep... but the one fish over 6 lbs was taken along the bank where brim were bedding. Quote

If you ever have an open seat let me know. I'm always willing on giving out whatever info I know about whatever waters I have fished. Nobody I currently fish with does any tourney fishing so he spots we find are open info. Would love to learn some new waters also as my main fishing partner is 81 years old and doesn't venture out very far from where we are located. We have consistently found plenty of fish and areas that hold a lot of fish. Just uncertain as to what baits and presentations may work better to up our numbers. 2 weeks ago we sat on a spot in Ida for 2.5 hours catching more then 3 dozen fish between us and was mixed bag of peacocks sunshine and LMB. M major question is should I be dragging the bottom in 30+ FOW or should I be looking at a certain depth and target them there? There's not much in the way of bottom structure in any of the places we've found. Quote

I know a ton of peacocks spots in the canals though. Ida I think is better, but have very little experience fishing off shore. Nobody I know has a clue of how to fish it and I'm very inexperienced with it. Quote

Shanes7614 Posted June 20, 2015 Author Posted June 20, 2015 There's a few here and there bedded up but have noticed most aren't paired up yet. I normally see the mate hanging around the weed sections around the beds but only saw two pairs this past Wednesday. Seems like most are still cruising. A ton of tilapia using the beds now and I think the peas take over when the tilapia are done. My guess is in about 2-3 weeks they'll be bedding in pairs and heavy into it. It becomes almost too easy to catch them at that point. Lol. Small xraps with fastach so they sink slowly are DEADLY for them on the beds. Let sink to bottom of the bed if it even makes it and then one small twitch and fish on. In rare occasions you may have to cast a second time to the bed. If they miss it really ticks them off and become even more super aggressive. Quote

The mayans and tilapia are keeping them off, catching lots of mayans. Once they get on the beds I have to tease the crap out of them, may take 10 or more casts. The one in my avatar was caught (a couple of months ago) in an area that doesn't have a lot of vegetation and the water is generally pretty clear, spotting them is easy. Quote

Although if your finding bedded pairs and it takes 10 casts to hook into one you may want to try something besides your Maribou jigs. I saw and caught several this past Wednesday that were bedded just between woolbright and boynton beach blvd. Was the fish in your avatar caught from any of the deep holes my original title refers to? Quote
Gotfishyfingers? Posted June 20, 2015 Posted June 20, 2015 If there at the bottom of 35ft, try a drop shot, texas/carolina rig or a jig (if you can keep it clean of snot). Your drop shot rig can be on a 7ft mh spinning with 10-12 lb test. If there suspending within that water column, depending at what depth, you can use swimbaits, deep diving cranks, jerkbaits (I prefer suspending or sinking), possibly topwater spooks, prob baits etc. You can also try the technique called strolling in an area like that. I haven't fished up there in a while but if I do and have an open seat, I will hit ya up! Quote

Being in a boat I would think it's difficult to spot them on beds, as the shoreline in some of those areas are covered up with weeds. I've fished the Boynton/Woolbright area many many times. I mostly fish places that are quite bit clearer and from shore, none on beds where I go. As of late the ones I am catching are in deeper water and caught as result of blind not sight casting, lure of choice has been blue and chrome flat rap. Quote

GLADES Posted June 21, 2015 Posted June 21, 2015 Try a white V spinner silver blades bait fished above the bottom in those holes. Fished there with krzkev a few years ago, and it worked quite well. Not guarantee sucess, but worth a try. Quote

If that's what you mean they've been used multiple times and no success. Quote
shallow thinker Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 I think I'm done fishing Osborne and Ida till the fall. The ski traffic is pretty fierce and that makes it hard to fish the main lake areas. Quote
