Super User fishballer06 Posted June 17, 2015 Super User Posted June 17, 2015 I started fishing chatterbaits last year and didn't have much luck with them. This year however, they have become a mainstay in my arsenal and they are now one of my confidence baits. I'm currently throwing them on an Abu Veracity 7' MH-F and using 40lb. braid with a FC leader. This setup seems to really transmit the blades vibration really well for me and I think I'm getting pretty good hookup ratios as well. I was wondering what everyone else is using to throw these things? I'm wondering if I should buy a rod specifically for throwing these lures. If I were to get another rod, I'd probably be looking in the $150-250 range. Any suggestions? Quote

Bass_Fanatic Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 I use a powell 723 "swimjig" rod. It's got a good tip on it with plenty of backbone. Quote

Any reason why you suggest straight fluoro? I have tried using 13lb. Sniper (Japan direct) with chatterbaits and I feel that it's too stretchy and that I am not getting a solid enough hookset and I'm losing more fish that way. I also feel like the braid with a FC leader transmits better. Just curious to your thoughts. Thanks. Quote

Chatterbait style baits tend to have a better hook up ratio /w a "delayed" hook set to allow a fish to take the bait. I've tried it on a glass rod and didn't like the feeling of retrieving and felt it took too much effort to effectively rip it thorough grass. I used the 733 for a while /w fluoro and, like you mentioned, wasn't getting a solid enough hook set with the larger hooks these baits use. It worked, but wasn't ideal. I tried braid on a 3 power Dobyns and it helped the hook up ratio but with a line that lacks stretch, i felt like I was almost over working the rod with the baits I throw. Went to a 734 that is a tad faster and used fluoro. Perfect rod and line set up for how and where I fish chatterbait style baits which is around grass and wood. It has enough power to turn a fish around and the stretch in fluorocarbon allows a fish to take the bait a touch longer but also transmits better feel on slack line bites. I do use high end fluorocarbon that has quite a bit lower stretch and better abraison/handling properties than lower end line. that may or may not effect your experience. 1 Quote
Super User MCS Posted June 17, 2015 Super User Posted June 17, 2015 I am using a 6-9 mh veracity now. I had a 734 champ. I like the veracity and have no complaints, but I would say for spinnerbaits and bladed jigs the 734 really shines. It has more of a mod-fast taper than the veracity. Quote
Super User MCS Posted June 17, 2015 Super User Posted June 17, 2015 I think if you go to a fluro or yo zuri hybrid line on the veracity it will have more of the "slower" action Iabass talks about. I have fished both rods with 30lb braid and 15lb hybrid. The hybrid dulls the feel slightly but also give stretch. Now I am running 30lb braid on the veracity because it is my multi purpose. If I did dedicate it to chatter duty only it would have yo zuri on it. 1 Quote
Jon G Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 Dobyns Champion 734 is probablly one of the best Bladed Jig rods out there. I also use 16lb Sniper on it. Quote
FlipSide Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 I use a 6'9' MH-Mod Fast Denali Rosewood Spinnerbait rod for chatterbaits and I love it. A little forgiveness with the MF action so I don't rip the bait away from the fish. Quote
Mr Swim Jig Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 I use a Daiwa Tatula 7' 2" MH/R action rod for my chatterbait/bladed jig baits. Quote

ZB85 Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 I also use a Daiwa Tatula 7'2"mh/r for chatterbaits. Absolutely love this rod for chatterbaits. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted June 18, 2015 Posted June 18, 2015 I like a similar power and action for jigs and spinner-baits and a chatter bait would fall into the same category. I don't buy into the delayed hookset / pulling the bait from the fish theory. If you're missing strikes on a moving bait there's something else at play (color, size, fish mood etc.) If a bass really wants a bait none of us has the reflexes to beat him to it. 1 Quote

JGBassinAL Posted June 18, 2015 Posted June 18, 2015 I throw mine on a custom 7'3" heavy/moderate glass rod. I used to throw mine on a Dobyns 734 but I will never throw them on anything but a heavy/moderate glass rod again. Brett Hite knows what he's doing with chatterbaits. I throw swimbaits on heavy/moderate glass rods as well. The tip isn't as light as you think and the chatterbait has a better action when it is being ripped through grass. I have thrown a chatterbait on a medium heavy/moderate glass rod as well but I wasn't a fan. Like someone posted earlier, it didn't pull thru the grass well. But a heavy/moderate is perfect. If you are interested in a custom I can hook you up. All blanks are made by Batson (board sponsor). The glass blanks are E-Glass, not the crappy S-Glass that most production glass rods are made out of. Quote

I fish mine on a 6' 6" MH/F/6:4.1 Speed Spool/15lb Big Game. Seems like most fish I catch have it choked, no reason for a delayed response when the bait looks like this anyways. Quote
SenkoGuru Posted June 18, 2015 Posted June 18, 2015 I just ordered a Megabass Spinnerbait Special I'm going to try out for chatterbaits, spinnerbaits and swim jigs but I have no XP with it yet. I've been using a Duckett White Ice 7'1" Medium Heavy and It is truly great for those baits, the action of that rod is perfect. Quote
illinifan4152 Posted June 18, 2015 Posted June 18, 2015 Been using a kistler magnesium ts crank, rattle, and roll model. It's a 7' mh moderate-moderate fast action. Perfect all around rod for chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, square bills, bigger jerkbaits, topwater, etc Quote
wnybassman Posted June 18, 2015 Posted June 18, 2015 7' mh/F with 50lb braid for me. 9 times out of 10 when they are hitting it, they are hitting it like they mean it. I don't like to give them an inch, and often times they hook themselves. 1 Quote

masterbass Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 I also use the same rod for chatter baits and spinner baits. I throw them on a carbonlite 7' mh/f and 30lb suffix 832 with 15lb fluoro leader. It's simple and inexpensive, but it works for me. Quote
