reb67 Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 I have two Berkley 6' 6' MH M action rods and I am not sure what would be the best set up for these rods. If any one as any advice it would be appreciated . Richard Quote
Ozark_Basser Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Something with treble hooks. I would say spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, swimjigs, or other single hook moving baits, but a moderate action rod is a little harder to be accurate with and too soft to drive a jig hook. Probably too soft for jerkbaits also. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted June 14, 2015 Super User Posted June 14, 2015 Squarebills and I wouldn't rule out jerkbaits. 1 Quote
Ozark_Basser Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Squarebills and I wouldn't rule out jerkbaits. I guess it would depend on how someone likes to fish jerkbaits. Jerking on slackline with a moderate action rod would be difficult to achieve the action I desire in a jerkbait. Braid with a leader could help some I guess. Square bills wouldn't be ideal for me either. The key word is ideal. Would it work? Yes, but short accurate casts aren't nearly as easy or accurate with a moderate action rod. Moderate fast is as slow as I would go. Personal preference I guess. Quote
Ozark_Basser Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Spinning or casting? Tom I guess that should have been the first question, but it's almost fair to assume they are casting rods. Not too many MH Moderate spinning rods out there. I looked around and found that Berkeley Lightning makes a 6'6 MH Moderate Fast in a casting model. Only fast actions in spinning with the same length. Are these the rods you have? If so, square bills, shallow cranks, jerkbaits, and topwaters with trebles would be ideal. At least, in my book. Quote
BASSPATROL247 Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Ive never seen a lightning rod or lightning rod shock with a mod. Action... i will say this though, ive had two spinning and one lightning rod shock and had all three of them break between the last two eyes before the tip when fighting fish, no abuse, wasnt trying to swing them in the boat they just broke. I will never buy a berkley rod as long as i live! I sent all three in and berkley would not replace them because they said the blanks broke due to misuse and not normal use whatever that means.. total BS on their part, normal use is not landing a fish??? I love fireline and the nano line but will not buy it anymore...thankfully i have a bunch i bought previously.... Quote

It didn't take you long to change your rod preference for squarebills and jerk baits. LOL Quote

Super User WRB Posted June 15, 2015 Super User Posted June 15, 2015 No standards exists to clearly define power or action, each rod maker is different. Fenwick a few decades ago introduced numerical power numbers; 1 through 8 that met recommended dead weight lifting power before the rod bottomed out and couldn't lift more weight, closest to a standard. Action at one time met how the rod bends under "light" line pressure, whatever light pressure means? Parabolic means the rod bends evenly in arc. A traditional moderate the rod bends about 1/2 the upper length, fast 1/3rd the upper length, extra fat 1/4th the upper length. Moderate bass rod is generally easier to cast, the extra fast more difficult with most lures. Today's high end rid blanks don't bend like the traditional blanks. Medium heavy or 3 to 4 power, fast action is your basic bass rod, spinning being less power, casting being higher power with the same rating. Tom PS, you can test your rods power by using a plastic bag, put 1 pint plastic drinking water bottles that weigh 1 pound each into the bag and tie your line to it and lift. Most MH rods bottom out at 3 bottles or 3 lbs dead weight, less power than you think. Test the rods action by slowly lift the rod when testing power and watch the upper section bend under light pressure. 1 Quote

I have three, two of which are so old the fore grip is coming apart, and never broke one. I do have a newer 7' Med with a moderate fast action. Model 701MS. http://www.berkley-fishing.com/berkley-rods-spinning-rods-berkley-lightning-rod/1363851.html#specifications I love this rod. I bought it for small lures with trebles like Rapala Floating minnow. But it has also become my Wacky rig rod. 1 Quote

They were all 3 different rods, meaning they all were not the same lightning rods, the two spinning rods are a few years old and the casting lightning rod shock broke the second time i used it where the spinning rods lasted a year or two before breaking. The casting rod was a gift. Ive had lots of them o er the years and really liked em for the money but after the last few broke and berkleys customer service im done with them(berkley) as a whole... 1 Quote
