Does anybody here have experience with the iON cameras? They seem interesting, and are less expensive than GoPro cameras. Debating on which ones I should get...

Check out the Garmin Virb. I have the Virb Elite. Easy to use and get started with and there's lots of add ons available out there. I got a nice suction cup mount for mine with an indicator that shows if it's coming loose, an adapter to plug into my boats cigarette lighter, and a wrist band controller to start/stop recording and take pictures.

I also have a Virb Elite.  I love the 6 hr recording time, and the wi-fi app on my phone that let's me use the phone as a viewfinder as well as control recording remotely.  It's also a lot smaller and easier to use than a GoPro.  Costs less too!

I didn't know about the wi-fi app. That would be great so I can see if my big head is in the shot or not  :eyebrows: . The long recording time is great too.

Nothing in the action sports  camera market can film in the quality a GoPro can with most of the other cameras topping out at 1080p/30fps.  However, for the price and the fact that we are filming fishing and not a major motion picture.... Most of the other cameras will get the job done, ESPECIALLY if your only interest and use for it is to shoot clips for social media (which kill the quality of a video anyway...)

I've got a GoPro and love it. It's super easy to use, and has all the features and more that these other cameras have. They do cost a bit more, but I think it's worth it especially if you want to expand with it in the future. Like NJ said you can get others that will do a good enough job though. As long as it's not one you can get for like $30 - $50 at Walmart it should be ok. One other thing worth mentioning though is the frame rate. I know NJ said you don't need to record in a very high FPS for fishing, but if you're planning on taking snapshots straight from the video you really start to appreciate the higher FPS. It also ends up being clearer pictures as well, at least if there's movement (such as a bass tail-dancing boatside).

I'd really like to be able to do slow motion film. I'm looking at GoPros.. Including the GoPro Hero+ action camera. It says it is 1080p/60fps.. Would that be capable of slow mo?

It's capable of slow-mo. The higher the frame rate the more still images will be taken per second so if you shoot in say 60fps your slow mo sequences can be stretched out longer. You can still get decent slow motion out of a slower frame rate as well, but 60 will give you some great slow motion shots.

Ok. Thanks I may have to buy that one. I may buy a Hero 4 silver though depending on if I can get a deal or not.

I disagree with the comment suggesting nothing has better quality than the GoPro.

The Garmin Virb VIRB X and VIRB XE shoots high definition footage at 1080p/60fps, 12 megapixel photos at up to 30fps, and has built in GPS that allows you to track and overlay how fast, how far, how high, and how intense the moment truly was. And, VIRB X and VIRB XE are able to dive to 50 meters without a case, allowing you to capture cleaner and clearer video and audio.  No need to buy expensive accessories to get those underwater shots.

The Virb Elite can do 1080p 120fps!  This is exclusively for capturing slow-motion footage.

I have Gopro 4 Silver.  But I have to admit I don't take it with me when I go kayak fishing.  The last thing I want is to lose a $400 little camera like the GoPro.  I also dont' like the fact I always have to pay attention to the waterproof case and make sure it's closed.  Plus, with the water proof case on the GoPro, you will not get any sound.

I also have a Garmin Virb basic.  That thing is a fun camera.  The video quality is not as good as my GoPro 4, but it's water resistant out of its water proof case and with the water proof case it's completely water proof.  My Garmin Virb has a huge battery compared to the Gopro.  I guess I have to say that Virb is my go to camera for outdoor filming.

Garmin has discontinued the basic Virb.  I'm not sure about the Virb Elite.  They are just coming out with the new Virb XE and X that look more like the Gopros, but these new virbs will not need a water proof case at all.

I bought my Virb basic back in January for $100.00 with free shipping.  I think the price has gone up a little though.

The Elite is not waterproof. Is their a waterproof housing for it?

That's what i saw as well. It's probably a great camera in it's price range, but I like that I can shoot at higher resolutions AND higher FPS.
