What's The Best Braid For Shallow Diving Cranks ?

Hi all,

 

I like the casting ability and lack of 'bird's nests' because I'm a newbie to fishing so what braid would you recommend for shallow to medium diving cranks ?

I don't use braid for crankbait fishing.  The hooks are small and light wire.  Braid will bend them and straighten them out during the fight.  Bye bye fishy.

What rod?  I am glad braid doesn't give you a bird's nest.  Guess I am a better caster than you cause I can backlash braid without too much effort. 

 

My brother-in-law catches bass with braid and treble hook lures all the time.  Specifically an F11 Rapala.  He uses spinning gear only, and only 40# PP Original for line.  Never checked out the specs on his rods, but bet they are all Medium power and none with an extra fast tip.  I don't see why you can't use braid with some precautions.  1)  Forget a MH rod unless designed for crankbaits. 2) Lower drag pressure.  3)  Don't horse the fish, let the rod do its job.  4) Hook set with a slight flip of the wrist if necessary.  Most fish I catch on treble hook lures hook themselves.  I'm trying to remember if I even use a hookset with treble lures.

I have used braid for cranks on spinning with a med 7' rod with a mod tip with the drag set. It was 17# Fireline, but I think they have replaced that weight with 20#. In fact this is my go-to for the floating Rapala.

I find mono is cheap and a good line to learn baitcasting with. In fact I have no problems with mono and fluro, braid on the other hand tends to dig once in a while and cause me a backlash even with 50 pound braid.

Only brand I've used are powerpro and suffix 832

Power pro 20lb on medium action baitcast rods.   Haven't even come close to bending a hook.   Throw shallow running cranks and subsurface cranks all the time.

A good round #30 8 carrier such as Sufix 832 is my go to cranking line.

i like power pro super slick for my cranking needs.  It doesn't have stretch so having a more forgiving rod is important.

I will not use braid for cranking or spinner baiting. I know many do, and I did for a spell to see if I noticed a difference. I did notice a difference. My heart was broken by losing several big bass. Braid's  0 shock absorption serves a purpose, but in regards to cranks, those small hooks and the action of the strike requires more of a "give". To remedy that with braid, either you have to fish with a Med rod with a fast/mod tip, or loosen the drag and play the fish. Just my .02

I plan to fish this technique with a St Croix Avid 6ft 8" Medium Fast Action. I have 15lb Power Pro on a Shimano CI4+ now but I thought there would be a specific braid for this purpose ? I switched from Power Pro to Sunline SX1 on my Shakey Head rig and I like it better. It is just super smooth casting.

Does Sunline have something better for this purpose or Toray ?

Braid made specifically for crankbaits?  I can't see any manufacturer claiming a zero stretch line as being suitable for treble hooks.

I think the remedy is just set the drag looser that you would with mono and use a soft rod. Also, I've enjoyed the idea of putting a 2' mono / fluoro leader as shock absorption and stretch.

 

Sunline sx1 has been great for me in 20#. Will continue to use that until I get my heart broken. So far it's been treating me well
