Have any of you all ever fished this, and how is the fishing?

Our family is going to a reunion in IN. and our route takes us right along St. Marys, so we are thinking of going a couple days early, and renting a cabin there in about the middle of August.

Any tips?

I haven't fished there since I was a kid but I heard there was some type of contamination some years back and the fishing was horrible if not, non-existent. I remember it as shallow with a lot of lilly pads. Not a lot of help I know.

My family lives in St Marys, there for awhile you couldn't even get in the water due to some kind of algae that was just out of control. I haven't fished it since a kid either, but from what I remember it was big for carp. It was hand dug with shovels, so it is very shallow.

I haven't fished there in about 10 years but the algae bloom isn't bad this year. It's a good Lake for crappie and channel cats. Do a Google search and you will find multiple reports. Ohio game fishing has a extensive thread on the area forums for Grand Lake St Mary's.
