CwBTx Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 I have been looking to get myself a high quality combo such as a steez and maybe a jackal poison, but im not sure upon what other options are out there? I need help to find what I want!! haha Im pretty set on the reels part, but what rods are out there besides megabass and loomis and are super great rods? price is no biggy! thanks Quote
Lucky Craft Man Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 How about the Archangel? I have no idea how good this rod it, but its the most expensive one I can think of off hand (I assume this is an excercise in finding the most expensive rod there is and not nessarily the one that performs the best) Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted June 13, 2015 Super User Posted June 13, 2015 Personally if I had that much coin to spend on a rod, I would be looking at getting a custom rod built for myself. The problem would be selecting a builder. Mike at DVT (this forum's sponsor) builds rods as do quite a few others. 1 Quote
CwBTx Posted June 13, 2015 Author Posted June 13, 2015 ST Croix Legend Extreme. ST Croix Legend Extreme. I've been thinking about that one or the gary loomis, or the one mentioned in the topic. But it's not about the most expensive I just want the best one I can get. The one I'll ise most you know? Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted June 13, 2015 Super User Posted June 13, 2015 Megabass 6'9" Super Destroyer 1/4-1 1/4 lure rating. Fast action. Mount a Shimano Aldebaran 50 on it and you would have a sweet set up Quote

For close to half of what you'd pay for an exotic JDM rod you could have something exactly the way you want with equal or better performance. For reels I'd take a hard look @ the Alphas SV. I have one on the way and I have a feeling it'll be tough to beat for under $200. Quote
DaveT63 Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 For the money, I would recommend a custom build on a St Croix Legend Xtreme blank. Quote
Lucky Craft Man Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 On a serious note, if you want "The Best," get a NRX rod (best blank on the market) and have it stripped down and rebuilt be a custom rodmaker to get it balanced along with everything else you would want. If I had unlimited funds, that is exactly what I would do. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted June 13, 2015 Super User Posted June 13, 2015 G. Loomis NRX 843C and a Shimano Aldebaran. I have felt this combo and it has that magical feel to it that I just can't put in words. I have not fished it but when I had it my hand, what can I say, it felt like perfection. 1 Quote

His new company is North Fork Composites)? K2? Eternity2 blanks? Any of those blanks are on par IMO. If you want 'the best' talk to a rod builder with exactly what you're looking for. Getting what you're looking for should be 'the best' no? Quote

Super User kickerfish1 Posted June 14, 2015 Super User Posted June 14, 2015 Break it down into 3 camps... 1. A high end custom. If money is not a concern pick the best blank and components money can buy. Add trim pieces and decor to match the reel. Leave nothing behind that you would regret not getting at a later date. The build time would be only drawback however also consider a possibly lower resell value of a rod with your name on it and the name of the builder of there company. Also consider what warranty support they will offer you. 2. Your next option is to buy a JDM rod. Take a look at Evergreen, Megabss, Jackall, etc. The problem is you may be able to source some nice rods from reputable US dealers who can order them but you will pay full retail price. If you buy the rod from Japan expect to get hit with customs fees which could be $50-$100+. You will have no warranty support either unless purchased through an authorised US dealer. The craftsmanship and beauty of these rods is as good as you will find. 3. Of all the off the shelf rods that are performance driven it would be hard to beat an NRX. The rod is among the best for feel but the casting distance of the way the rod loads and launches a bait is incredible. You may be able to find a rep sample for under $400. You also have a solid warranty and great resell value and a market for them. What would I do? Not sure, I have all of the above options but if I had to buy another I would go with an NRX or Custom from a builder who will do exactly what I want done and warranty the rod in a way I was comfortable with. I wouldn't try an Archangel until I knew more about them and warranty support. I would find an NRX on sale on start there. It should meet your needs from a pure performance standpoint. Quote

Your're right, I can't really quailfy this statement as I have only fished two of all the ones you mentioned. To me, if money was no object, this is what I would do, because I like the varibility that G Loomis has and I am just plain used to the action and power of their rods. I was going to get a custom NFC HM rod made, but I had no where to go to even handle one to see how it felt. Therefore, let me clarify, I would get a G Loomis NRX rod modified, because they are an incredible blank (notice I didn't say the best there is) and are readily availible to see which length, action, amd power you like vs. taking a shot in the dark of getting a custom made from a blank you will never be able to feel until after you order it. Super User kickerfish1 Posted June 14, 2015 Super User Posted June 14, 2015 Very valid points Luckycraftman. Only thing to consider would be warranty support or possible lack there of from the custom builder. Quote

Customs fees???? I just placed an order with JLS and paid $12 in shipping. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted June 14, 2015 Super User Posted June 14, 2015 $12 shipping for a reel or rod? Your customs fees won't become apparent until they deliver it to you. These additional charges won't show up at the point of purchase. Not everyone gets hit with them and the amounts vary. Quote

hawkoath Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Sometimes customs is charged. Sometimes its not. I feel it's almost a lottery at times. It's interesting that Luckycraftman mentioned stripping down and building back up a NRX. I think I saw this exact thing on another forum and boy did it seem a painstaking and long process (not to mention costly). So it has been done but as to the feasibility of it for the average angler or even the average enthusiast... As for North Fork Composite blanks I think they are fantastic and wish that Batson who distributes them could find some way to allow others to really try them out for themselves. Quote
Super User Angry John Posted June 16, 2015 Super User Posted June 16, 2015 First you need to filter custom or off the shelf. I like st Croix and there blanks are one of the best. I like the ledgend but full handles are my style. The new extreme or split handles are not my thing. They have a great warranty. Quote
