Braid To Fluoro Knot, Tired Of Failures

I used to use a double uni to connect braid to fluoro and had similar problems.  LOTS of breaks at the knot, on the fluoro side.  I did some researchI read about how you need to really lubricate the line and how fluoro can get weak if you cinch down and tighten to early, where you should leave the knot loose until the very end where you cinch down. I still had breakage issues and eventually said screw it and started using a Spro Power Swivel between the two lines to make the connection.  I use the smallest (35 lb, size 10) swivels and no longer have the breakage issues.  Even on snags the hook will bend or the lure with break out of the snag before the knots at the swivel will fail.

The FG knot is low profile and nearly impossible to tie on the water under fishing conditions....practice and tie it at home.

lean the rod away from you, over the gunnels, but the line in your teeth and off you go.  I re-rigged several rods this way up in Canada a couple of weeks ago with wire leaders and with flouro leaders - works every time.

 

I can get this done in about 3 minutes if I set up for it right.

A good leader knot should never come undone or break unless you cut the line with scissors, if it breaks even when you pull straight back trying to break your line, it makes leader use way less practical. With the Alberto, your leader will break near or at your lure if you intentionally break on a snag or whatever, never at the knot if tied properly.

 

 

This has been my experience as well with the Alberto/Modified Albright.

Instead of tying a knot, use  the smallest spro swivel between the braid and fluorocarbon. Great on spinning gear, eliminating most of the line twist.

The alberto has never let me down but I'm going to experiment with the fg knot because it looks like it'll run through guides better.

Alberto/Albright knot with the braid wrapped around the fluoro (more wraps for light line, less for heavier.) I'm guessing that the difference in diameter is negligible with 50lb braid to 10lb fluoro. It probably doesn't make much of a difference, but I usually tie my leaders about twice the length of the rod I'm using; this allows me to re-tie several times on the same leader. I'll replace it entirely when it gets to about 24" or so, and my knot usually holds up until that point.

 

I remember that it took me several years before I truly mastered leader knots. Sometimes they were solid, other times they would fail almost instantly. Uni to uni was the first that I used, but it's too cumbersome to tie and less reliable than the Alberto. Whatever knot you choose, practice it until you understand how it works and can verify that you've tied it correctly. 

 

Check your line guides for any rough spots/nicks. Also, on some baitcast reels the level wind mechanism is an area that catches the knot. Check that too.

 

This is very important. If possible watch a You tube video of them tying this leader connection knot or whichever knot you decide on using.  

 

Tie them slowly and moisten the heck out of them.
