Best Tactics For Amberjack Fishing?

Is the plan fishing a charter or private boat, I've done both for Aj's.  If a charter you don't have to know a thing, the captain and the mate will.  On a private boat we generally target them around wrecks and deeper reefs on a drift. Frozen sardine or live goggle eyes will catch most offshore species.  A very popular offshore method is deep water jigging with lures like a butterfly jig, there are variations made by other manufacturers.  

 

My largest AJ (100+) was caught trolling in Banderas Bay, PV Mexico while trolling.  Although I've caught bigger fish never caught one so tough to land.  By the end of the day my muscles were strained I could not lift my arms high enough to comb my hair.  I did catch many other good sized fish too that day, being a young guy in my early 50's it was great, I would not want to do it now.

 it's on a private boat. That's a really impressive fish, I'd love to see pictures if you have any, I look forward to battling these fish as I hear they have an insane amount of fight and battle in them. Thank you very much

You can also chum them up top and then throw live bait or topwater lures at them.

Man would I LOVE to catch an amberjack.... Maybe one day haha

We use live bluefish in the 10-15" range for AJs. They are pretty easy to target, not so easy to bring to the boat. Fishing jigs around wrecks can get expensive and live bait works better anyways

We catch them on reefs, live bait never fails. Drop a bottom rig with cut bait, catch you a few grunts or ruby red lips, put them on heavy bottom tackle and hold on!

aj's are a beast to get in, a 20# aj is literally like trying to tow a bus, uphill, backwards, lol. The bigger ones will wear you out, but they sure are fun to catch...for awhile.

I did take some photos of that AJ, where they are I don't know.......lol.

I do believe they were take on 35 mm film, scanned and put onto my computer about 15 years ago.  I had a computer crash lost everything, but they were backed up on a cd.  I've been looking for those vacation cds for 10 years, somehow when I moved to Florida they didn't make the trip with me.  I may still have the hard copies in my attic, if they aren't faded out.
