So I am getting tackle together. I have not been out in 4 years while completing a nursing degree. Now there is a bunch of new stuff out there and I can't buy it all. So what hooks do you recommend?

Past:

Always use Zebco 33 reel

Powerbait is fine

I remember loving the 'Chomper' hooks. They are sharp and release easy if swallowed.

OH and if you have any luck with plastic 'fake' bait this season, lemme know the type and colors please.

Good luck with your nursing degree! My wife

is an RN, been doing it for almost 20 years now.

As for hooks, I recommend highly, Gamakatsu

brand. They are strong, sharp and stay sharp.

I'm a wacky rig guy, like it more than most other

rigs, so I'll recommend either the Gamakatsu

Splitshot/Dropshot hook in 1 or 1/0, or the same

brand hook in Wide Gap Finesse, same sizes.

Bait colors - things like watermelon magic, or

something that imitates a crawfish in your waters.

Another is Bass Pro's Hot Pepper Frog, a watermelon

green/orange laminate. I have a lot of success on it.

Thanks for the good information and wishes on my nursing degree. Taking state board test on TuEsDaY!!! Then fishing in peace for a week before I dive into the new career. I just did online order and I did order the Gamakatsu's hooks that you recommended. I love powerbait and I ordered the watermelon/red glitter.

Good luck on your fishing season!!!

Like roadwarrior I like Gamakatsu hooks. The 7" Power Worms are a go to bait for me. Any of the Ragetail baits are awesome! A good quality spinnerbait, buzz bait, weedless frog are all good to have.

Good luck on your test and congrats on making through school!

Try out some senkos or Yum Dingers. Throw them on a wacky rig like Darren suggested.

Pick up some 4-inch finesse worms, Berkley Bottom Thumpers are pretty good ones that are inexpensive. Rig them with a 2/0 EWG hook and a split shot a couple of inches down the line.

You probably want to try a popper or two, there's nothing like catching a bass on topwater.

Start from there and expand your repertoire.

I would also agree that Gammys are the best hooks.

Good luck!

Gamakatsu 2/0, 3/0 or 4/0 EWG Offset Worm Hook.

I will second this.  I generally use 3/0 EWGs.

Netbait Paca Craws have been my go-to plastics ever since my brother gave me a pack of them.  I keep wanting to break out my Senkos, but I never get to them because the Paca Craws work so well.  Alabama Craw and Okeechobee Craw have been the two colors that seem to work the best for me.

Do you plan to bass or trout fish using your Zebco 33 outfit?

Zebco for bass. It may not be as smooth as some others, but its cheep, easy, and keeps me in my comfort zone. It cast pretty far too. Most people like the open face reels, but I am just more comfortable with the old school zebco.

Nothing wrong with using the outfit you have, just need to know what to suggest based on how you fish.

Soft plastic worms should work for you and a few techniques work good with both spinning and spin casting.

1. Split shot; this uses a round Water Grimlin spout shot about the size of a pea or 1/4" diameter. Size 1 light wire Mustad Aberdeen style straight shank worm hook and 5" long straight or curl tail finesse worms in night crawler colors. The slip shot is put on about 14" above the hook, the is qhook weedless.

2. Drop shot rig; this uses a drop shot sinker or a bell sinker, a size 1 drop shot hook and a straight tail or curl 5" finesse worm in night crawler colors. The worm is nose hooked. The hook is tied using a Palomar knot, the knot tag end should be about 12" long and tie or clip on the 1/4 oz weight to the end. The hook is directly on the line above the weight.

Take a look at some video's on this site on how to weedless or Texas hook plastic worms and

drop shot rigs. Nose hook is simple hooking the worm about 1/4" behind the nose end, hook point exposed.

You simply cast the rig out, let it hit bottom and lightly shake the line using the rod tip for about 15 seconds, then reel in about 1 to 2 feet on line and repeat.

If your line is old, have changed to 8 lb test monofilament line, Trilene XL is good brand and doesn't cost too much.

Places to fish; look for points of land with deeper water around it, the back of coves look good, however get weedy during the summer. Weed beds can be good places for bass, your tackle isn't suited for that. You can fish the open water edges of those area and around boat docks.

Good luck with your fishing and with your nursing career.

Tom

Pas, Owner #5133 size 1 or 1/0 can be used for both split and drop shot rigs.

Thanks for the info. I do change my line every year to trilene. I just haven't been able to get out the door to use. Lol. Right now I'm like a kid waiting for the rain to stop so I can go play.

Good info. There won't be many docks where I go next week but lots of Lake.

Thanks for your rig info. I will use it. I have to outgrow my granny knot so my 12lb bass doesn't get away.

I'm partial to VMC and my favorite hook is the VMC Half Moon head.  I pair it with a few baits but since you mentioned Powerbait I will focus on that

1 - Power Grub - Salt and pepper and Green Pumpkin my favorite colors

2 - Power Shaky Worm - green pumpkin, watermelon red, black

3 - Chigger Craw - Black/Blue, Black/Red

Havoc is close enough to Powerbait and I absolutely love the beat shad.  Caught on a lot of their colors!

Google "Trilene knot".  It's very easy to tie and very reliable knot strength.
