Super User Chris at Tech Posted June 9, 2015 Super User Posted June 9, 2015 The Okuma Guide Selects are well-regarded 3 Quote
jjconnaire Posted June 10, 2015 Author Posted June 10, 2015 ive heard that! I may entertain them Quote
jjconnaire Posted June 10, 2015 Author Posted June 10, 2015 med-hvy (1/2oz-5oz) or hvy (1-6oz) I am planning on using this rod exclusively for swimbaits for bass/stripers Quote
bassr95 Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 It's a little light for you, but the Powel inferno 765 SBR is absolutely awesome for throwing 6" Hudds (Among other things) Quote
stkbassn Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 You might check that Fury 795 Dobyns. Looks like a winner to me. I'm getting one of those for Hudds and also another Okuma Guide select MH for rats, slammers, and other big topwater baits. I think it's good to have two swimbait rods. One that is stiff enough for backhook baits and one that will handle the big treble hooked baits too. That's just my thinking. I do think either of those rods will do it all pretty well and both right there in your price range. I guess TW has the Fury? Maybe they don't. If not, Okuma all the way, Quote
Super User deep Posted June 10, 2015 Super User Posted June 10, 2015 I'd fish a 5 power rod for those. Mattlures MH, Okuma MH, Dobyns 795ML, GGR light are the four I used. Loving the GGR, but I don't think Greg/ Harry make them anymore. No idea about stripers. Quote
zeth Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 Phenix M1 Swimbait rod. I have a few and have never had any problems Quote
Super User J Francho Posted June 10, 2015 Super User Posted June 10, 2015 Here's another option: http://www.bassresource.com/fishing_lures/mat-daddy-helios-review.html The other rod I use for what you're throwing is a custome build on a Saint Croix LTB 7'-9" Heavy/Fast. Quote
Super User WRB Posted June 10, 2015 Super User Posted June 10, 2015 If you are looking at the Okuma Guide Special 7'11"swimbait rod, get the heavy, it's good for 68 Hudd, OK for the 8" Hudd. I don't like the butt end pistol grip on this rod, however it's easy to sand off round. Okuma is coming out with a new swimbait line this fall. When evaluating a swimbait rod start with the lure weight you plan to use, add the recommended lure weight together and divide by 2 for average lure weight, this should equal the lure you plan to fish with most often. jjconnaire Posted June 17, 2015 Author Posted June 17, 2015 wound up getting the 7'11" okuma H 1-6oz guide series swimbait rod. Let me tell you the build quality is so much better than the IROD's ive had ots crazy.... you may think it sounds like a Broom stick but its actually very limber for the power it puts out. The micro guides are nice on the IROD but much too delicate and the inserts had came out on 2 consecutive rods i Bought. Not saying it wasnt-couldnt be a nice rod, but i cant deal with a rod that is unreliable. In my opinion, the Okuma casts a 8" hudds fine, however I wouldnt cast anything over 5 or so OZ on it. It will definetly work but you are testing the limits of the rod. Quote
Super User deep Posted June 17, 2015 Super User Posted June 17, 2015 Perfect 8" ROF5 rod. Supposedly was designed for hardbaits. You'll love it. Quote
jjconnaire Posted June 17, 2015 Author Posted June 17, 2015 yes i can 100% see how it was designed for hardbaits (moderate action), it as also designed for hudds with trebles Quote
