doyle8218 Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 Anyone use these? There are some great bulk deals available but I have never used them. And user opinions? Thanks Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted June 9, 2015 Super User Posted June 9, 2015 I bought a few larger packs a while back. They're sharp, but don't hold the point like a gammie, Mustad, etc. Worse, they will rust faster than the name brands. If you go through a lot of hooks and don't typically use one for more than a couple fish, they're not a bad deal. But, I'm done with them. My newest money saving experiment is bulk name-brand 60 deg jig hooks with hitchhikers -- I'm much more pleased so far. 2 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted June 9, 2015 Super User Posted June 9, 2015 I've also experienced hook dullness with these. They're fine for the most part, but I stopped using them due to having a couple break on me. Never had a Gamakatsu break on me. Quote
doyle8218 Posted June 9, 2015 Author Posted June 9, 2015 Hey thanks guys it is nice to get feedback before a new purchase. Quote
TheMightyQuinn Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 I have been using the magna super lock hooks for years now without a problem. I keep several rust inhibitors in all my boxes. I have noticed they rust a little quicker than most, but I also view hooks as a disposable item. I buy them when they are in sale, like buy 2 get 1 free. I think it comes out to be about $11 for 60 or so hooks. I have never had a hook break, only bend if I get a bad snag. Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted June 10, 2015 Super User Posted June 10, 2015 BPS hooks are crap at best. I have broken them, had them come out with open eyes, and bent points. They're made by VMC, but that means nothing. There made by VMCs Asian affiliate which, like everything BPS, is made for the cheapest they can. Honestly believe that you can buy ten for the same price as the 25 pack and come out ahead in the long run. I shouldn't have to keep a bunch of rust inhibitor packets or Zerust tabs in my box for terminal tackle alone. I fish hooks from a lot of manufacturers, and every, single one is better than the BPS hooks. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 10, 2015 Global Moderator Posted June 10, 2015 I've had good success with the H2O brand worm hook from Academy. You roll a point occasionally but for $5 for a 20 pack it's not a big deal to throw it away and tie on a new one. Quote
TorqueConverter Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 I like a lot of the BPS stuff but Gamakatsus are my go too cheap hooks and when I'm too much of a cheapskate for even those I'll go Matzuo America. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted June 10, 2015 Super User Posted June 10, 2015 I switched over to Gammys. Had an issue with the hooks breaking, and the hook sizes changed. I use to buy 2/0 and 3/0 size, but now the hooks are nearly the same size. Quote
Chief 2 Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 I also have gotten away from the BP hooks. I use Gammy now and have been pleased. Quote
robster80 Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 i used the xps basspro hooks for awhile. never had an issue but mostly use gammy now. no issues with them either. if i was gonna buy a store brand id probably try the academy h20 hooks all their stuff is good Quote
Tyler Klein Posted June 18, 2015 Posted June 18, 2015 I use the Magna O'Shaughnessy Offset and they work fine. Never bent one. I break off like 4 times a day so having these cheap hooks is nice. Quote

Very sharp out of the package and will stay sharp for an entire morning. The cost is icing on the cake. Quote
kikstand454 Posted June 18, 2015 Posted June 18, 2015 I echo the above. I liked the bps superlock hooks, until I found academy. Now my "disposable" hooks. .. ( t-rigs around riprap, pitching into submerged bushes. ..) are h2o express. Gammy for everything else. Well except punching mats. ... trokar or vmc for that. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted June 18, 2015 Super User Posted June 18, 2015 I've used them in the past and they're ok. They will get the job done for cheap. I still use their vertical drop hooks though as they seem to perfectly fit a BBB Cane Thumper. For pretty much anything else now I use Trokar. Quote
bflp3 Posted June 18, 2015 Posted June 18, 2015 I also bought a bulk pack of the BPS hooks and regret it. They are very sharp, but I keep bending the points on them and they rust too much. I'll stick with gamas from now on Quote

I'll stick with gamas from now onAnyone ever hear of a hook hone???? Rub said bent or dull hook along this little file type thing and low and behold a sharp hook!!! Same kinda situation is when people just toss certain worms or senkos away. If you rig Texas style mostly and tear the ends just snip torn end off and use for whacky rigging. Especially if someone is using o-rings. Sounds as if everyone on here has an unlimited amount of cash to throw away. It just confuses me how little people reuse certain baits and consider them throw aways. Quote

It just confuses me how little people reuse certain baits and consider them throw aways. I have one, the points are bent beyond repair, I've tried. When its honed, the bent part breaks off, leaving a point that is too thick to get sharp without a lot of honing. I don't have time for that in a tournament. It's much cheaper to just buy good gamas and not break them constantly. Quote
