Super User buzzed bait Posted June 8, 2015 Super User Posted June 8, 2015 my neighbor came over last night to show me the 3' copperhead he just killed in his backyard..... no thanks! Quote
Al Wolbach Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 Your location says Virginia and I did not think they were that far north. The cottonmouth that I have seen were much darker but that may vary from one area to another. Do you have additional pictures? Quote
Super User Darren. Posted June 8, 2015 Super User Posted June 8, 2015 That's a Black Rat snake, with his markings still visible. Looks like it may have eaten recently. Was he already on the rock when you showed up? Looks like he was flattening his head to scare you off, make himself look like he's venomous. Beautiful snake. I've caught a bunch of them and have got some Black Rat + Corn Snake hybrids... DO NOT KILL!! 2 Quote
quanjig Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 I think at its norther most, cotton mouth may exist in the dismal swamp of va. I've had buddies swear up and down they have seen them here in NOVA but I highly doubt it! Quote

They typically do not range too far north of our area. 1 Quote

I've had buddies swear up and down they have seen them here in NOVA but I highly doubt it! Me too. I've had buddies in Central Va calling brown water snakes cottonmouths for years. They can get a little "thick" and look gnarly, but yeah just a water snake. Never say never I suppose one could always hop on a boat or what not. I guess they hang out with all the large black cats people catch a glimpse of but no pictures or bodies exist lol Quote
CeeJay Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 Yeah I can't count how many times I've heard my friends mention seeing cottonmouths when I was living in northern Va. In the 12 years I was fishing there I saw many banded water snakes (which after eating will be fat and somewhat resemble cottonmouth) but never once did I see an actual cottonmouth. Of course, that doesn't mean they aren't around. Down in Georgia though...that's a different story Once you see an actual cottonmouth it's hard to confuse them with anything else. Now out here in West Virginia people seem to think every snake is a copperhead. I did in fact see a genuine one recently out here near the house...but a lot of people will confuse corn snakes and rat snakes with copperheads. As for the snake in the pic I believe Darren is correct. Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted June 8, 2015 Super User Posted June 8, 2015 Probably not a cottonmouth. More likely polyester. Hootie 3 Quote

Super User deep Posted June 9, 2015 Author Super User Posted June 9, 2015 No, I don't have any more pics. The snake is alive and well (I hope). It climbed up the rock and then slithered over onto the other side. Quote
papajoe222 Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 We don't get them up here, or alligator, scorpion, or Tex-Mex either. Then again, I ain't seen a pair of Daisy Dukes yet this year. Just sayin' Quote

If it was a cottonmouth, it would have been rather belligerent and would have challenged you for the right to the rock A black rat snake was just wanting to get out of your way and on with is life. 1 Quote

I've caught a bunch of them and have got some Black Rat + Corn Snake hybrids... DO NOT KILL!! I was taught there are only two kinds of snakes. A rattlesnake and a chicken snake. If it ain't got a chicken in its mouth it's a rattle snake and you shoot it. Personally, I don't mind snakes. My fiance apparently used to have pythons and boas. One of which was 15 feet long when her ex made her get rid of it. I believe it now resides in the Memphis zoo. She stopped the car, in the rain none the less, to shoe a 4 foot copperhead out of the road the other day so as it wouldn't get run over. I mean stopped traffic to kick him out of the dang road. I dare say I was speechless from that one. 2 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 10, 2015 Global Moderator Posted June 10, 2015 Every water snake anyone sees around here is a cottonmouth. I've spent countless hours on the water here, and I've seen a grand total of 1 cottonmouth in KS. Other than that, 1 great big one at Table Rock sunning itself on a rock. Lots of water snakes in our lakes, but all harmless. 1 Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted June 10, 2015 Super User Posted June 10, 2015 Loads and loads of cotton mouths and copper heads down here. We've seen Cane Breaks in the woods as well. None of the snakes down here have an interest in messing with you. Truthfully, you are more likely to get bitten by a dang water snake then a cotton mouth. Cotton mouths are quite docile by snake standards. 1 Quote
