LApanic Posted June 7, 2015 Posted June 7, 2015 So I finally, after 4 years of fishing 65# braid bought a spool of Suffix 832 instead of the ole Original PowerPro. Power Pro has always been good to me, but now the advancement in lines these day, can cut down on a few minor annoyances I have with Power Pro.... 1st, Line Dig in spool...even on 10, 30 & 50, power pro sees to hang on occasion when casting due to line digging 2nd, Color fade, Im a green moss guy and always will be. I use Reel butter line conditioner and when I do fish braid, its frogging matts, slop and pads so all lines will fade, just seems a little quick with PP. Last but not least! Noise, PP Super Slick is not bad at all, but its still p0wer pro and has the line dig and fade, just not as much. I fish 3-4 differnt lakes with differnt quality throughout the year, and feel comfortable with 90% flourocarbon, so use SL Sniper all the way up to 25# for flipping wood and docks, beside SL Senshi mono for topwater, frogging and the occasional punch/flip into heavy vegetation. Suggestions, thoughts, go to he11, lol. Discuss Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted June 7, 2015 Super User Posted June 7, 2015 The 8 carrier braided lines are less noisy in rod guides than the 4 or 6 carrier no matter what brand it is. As far as digging in, that is a matter of line tension when putting the line on the reel spool. It is also a result of lower tension on the line in use. The larger diameter superlines dig in less under tension. If you like 25# mono, get a superline in that diameter ( maybe 150# test), it's all about the diameter. You won't pull as hard on a mono line that is the same diameter as the superlines you listed. If you did it would break and not dig in. Quote

Discuss Although Power Pro is not my braid of choice, the company has stayed abreast of the latest technology and now offers 8-member braid, the same as Sufix, Berkley & Seaguar. I should add that fading line color doesn't bother me, and though I hear it mentioned, I'm not aware of excessive braid noise (I'm probably living in a stupor) With braided lines testing over 20 pounds, line-burrowing should not be an issue. Of course, there are practices that can exacerbate line-burrowing. For example, chucking-&-winding a lightweight lure followed by tugging hard on a snagged lure. Under extreme pressure, the main line will bury into the loose coils on the spool. Nowadays, real differences between braided lines are largely illusory, and today more than ever I find myself selecting line brands based on line diameter (a finer line diameter offers many benefits). The braid I'm currently using for frogging & punching is Sunline 60 lb FX2 (0.014” dia) Roger 1 Quote
einscodek Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 I agree I barely see any difference between my 832 and slick8 both are strong, both fade, both have their coatings wear off Quote

War Eagle 44 Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 The 8 carrier braided lines are less noisy in rod guides than the 4 or 6 carrier no matter what brand it is. This isn't correct. SunLine FX 2 is an eight carrier line and it's just as noisy as Power Pro. Quote
Super User Master Bait'r Posted June 8, 2015 Super User Posted June 8, 2015 Line tension when spooling up is a moot point after the first cast. Wow so you cast out your entire spool with every toss? Chuck Norris is that you??? This isn't correct. SunLine FX 2 is an eight carrier line and it's just as noisy as Power Pro. It's true that FX2 is noisy... It is very different from PP though. FX2 is insanely tough and still dark green a full season+ later. I personally was not a big fan of PP. Also it's worth mentioning that Smackdown is a whole different animal and also an 8 carrier braid- very quiet and smooth but also very strong. It feels strong like FX1 but smoother. No idea how they do that. My frog rod has recoil guides so the quietness is kind of a big deal to me. Quote
Ozark_Basser Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 For the price, fx2 is hard to beat. Smackdown is nice, but it's not worth double the price of fx2. I've yet to try suffix 832 or tuffline, but out of PP, Spiderwire, FX2, and Smackdown, I'd go with FX2. 1 Quote
papajoe222 Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 I only use 30lb. braid and I do notice the line digging into itself on the spool after catching a big fish, or getting snagged. If I attempt a long cast immediately after, I will backlash. It's no big deal to make a short lob cast to loosen the line tension on the spool. When it comes to the noise, I look at it the same way as the noise from my ceramic bearings: if either was a big deal, I'd forgo the benefits of them. Quote

I think it is important the keep the whole spool, including backing because if make a long frog cast..40-50yds on a Tatula TypeR, im not far away from my backing. So I want backing tight so it doesn't gradually loosen on the spool with the retrive I use on my frog. I'm sold on everything Sunline...I think it's the best all around line company...period. So FX2 and Smackdown, which Smackdown sounds like the one I'll like, are going on the TW shopping cart to find my fav. Being 832 is a "sinking" braid, its not for me even though I haven't used any and have a spool. Quote

I'd like to get into recoil guides especially if I can get em and replace with stock guides. Currently using a 7'4" Smoke HVY. I have mixed feelings on micro-guides for frogging, but work fine till I invest in a Frog specific rod, like the new duckett frog specific Frog rod suggestions welcomed! Quote

Last time I checked FX2 went for ~$20. I got my last spool of Smackdown for $27. As I said before it's pretty ideal for me since I have recoil guides and the FX2 sounds like I'm pulling the fish into the boat with a zipper lol. I love everything about FX2 except for how rough it is, and that's the sole reason for me saying I want it for my frog rod.... And my finesse casting rig which also has recoils. (The 10#/15# is absolutely killer for finesse) But that's just my experience and circumstance. if I has SiC guides, etc. I'd probably just stick with FX2. Quote

A little expensive but holy crap it's amazing. I went through 3 other rods before I got to that one and I couldn't be happier. It's just a joy to fish across the board and incredibly versatile. Soft tip for light baits but incredible backbone on tap and incredibly light. Probably not worth swapping out your stock guides on a smoke, but you wouldn't be that far away if you sold it fwiw. The cork but was a turn of for me....because I've got a "nails on a chalkboard" deal with cork and dry hands or dryied out cork in general. All my rods are either EVA, wrapped in rod wrap or grip shrinking tubing from mudhole...just the way I roll, lol Have you fish the Concept reels? Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted June 9, 2015 Super User Posted June 9, 2015 The important thing to me with any braided line is the knot. I don't care about the line fading, I don't really notice any noise. I do have one reel spooled with 10# PP slick, it's nice and smooth but I see no real advantage in performance. Doesn't make any difference to me what kind of lure I'm using, it's 10 & 15# in fresh and 15 & 20# in salt. I have switched to a very inexpensive braid, the only one I've yet have wind knots in quite a few months of use. Strength with any brand of braid has never been an issue for me, my drag is never set any where near the breaking strength of the line. Being a spinning user I don't comprehend line digging in, 50# line is out of the question for me. Quote
