Schuyler co Posted June 7, 2015 Posted June 7, 2015 Throwing a jig and rage craw this morning, bite was consistent, but after I lost a leg on my rage craw I immediately caught two 17inchers, biggest fish all morning and continued to catch fish...I usually switch it out after losing an appendage maybe I'll start pulling one off to begin with! 1 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted June 7, 2015 Super User Posted June 7, 2015 I have pulled the pincers off Riverside Big Claws and left legs and antenna . Those were some big pincers , thought they might scare the fish . LOL Quote
Super User eyedabassman Posted June 7, 2015 Super User Posted June 7, 2015 One pincer will catch fish and sometimes better! Smallmouth will at times grab a claw and shake it untill the claw brakes off the body of the crawfish and then they will eat it. I think they do this because it looks too big so they take one off jmo! Many times when I fish a crawfish bait I will feel the hit and lay back into her and feel the weight of the fish but no hook up-that tells me they are grabbing the claw-Ion the next cast I will remove a claw and the hook ups start! Super User the reel ess Posted June 7, 2015 Super User Posted June 7, 2015 Downsizing one appendage at a time. Quote
martintheduck Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 I wish I could find the article... It was on facebook a cpl weeks ago... Study was done where they presented different craw lures to bass. Two appendage, one appendage, no appendages. The bass at the one with NO appendages more readily than all of them! Jeez I want to find the article again for y'all! Sorry. Point is - I've heard all about this one appendage thing and no appendage thing and, still, I replace mine anytime they rip off. I like all my appendages. 1 Quote
TorqueConverter Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 I read something a few years ago I found interesting. A lab study was done using bass that have never seen a lure in witch they presented live crawfish and craw soft plastics to the bass in a controlled environment. Long story short, the fished preferred the soft plastics and live craws with one claw missing, indicating that the crawfish prey item with one claw was more vulnerable than one with two claws. I found it funny that fisherman desire a bait claws that float upwards in a 'defensive posture' when the study showed that bass are most likely to strike the complete opposite. Quote
papajoe222 Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 Great info. Learning something all the time on this site. You know at least one of the guys that pours his own plastics will be experimenting on a one leg craw soon. We should come up with a name for it: 'RageTail Pirate Craw'. Stick a toothpick where the other claw should be and blacken one eye to look like a patch. 1 Quote
