CampingBass Posted June 7, 2015 Posted June 7, 2015 I have been using the search function and may be doing something wrong... After quite a long search I found a deal that was perfect for my needs, picked it up yesterday with a few extras the prev owner threw in. Only problem was he had to run to work so his wife gave me a quick 101 on breakdown and set up. Question - he threw in a sevylor 12v motor/batt/charger along with a humminbird piranha max220. Toon is a Creek Co 816 that looks like it was just pulled from the shelf. His wife was not sure how he mounted it - I reached out to him this morning and he said he never mounted the motor but was planning on it. If any folks know of a similar thread I would greatly appreciate the link. I am obviously open to any ideas/mods that come to mind. Thank you! Quote
Super User Scott F Posted June 7, 2015 Super User Posted June 7, 2015 I'm a pontoon guy myself. There doesn't seem to be many 'toon guys here on Bass Resource. After looking at pictures of your boat, there doesn't seem to be any trolling motor mount on it and I don't see anything on ODC's web page that offers one. It looks like you may have to make one and have it welded to the rear deck plate. One big problems with motors on pontoons is that it is hard to operate the motor while it's mounted directly behind your seat. I have a motor I can use on mine but in the 12 years I've had pontoons, I've only used the motor a couple of times. I use mine mostly for floating rivers where motors aren't needed and are usually too shallow for them to operate anyway. I haven't done too many modifications to mine. I did change the seat base so I could use a seat from my big boat. I added a couple of Ram mounts so I could mount a depth finder (not shown) and a camera mount. Mine came with a trolling motor mount. Quote
CampingBass Posted June 7, 2015 Author Posted June 7, 2015 I figured I'd have to fab something up too - I was thinking in front of the seat. The tm is so small and lightweight compared to my 55, and I was thinking for putting around ponds it would come in handy... maybe a day on the water with paddles will spark some ideas. That seat looks like a nice upgrade:) Thanks for the advice Scott! Quote
Fin Stalker Posted June 7, 2015 Posted June 7, 2015 When I fished out of a tube these guys were a great resource for me. http://bass-n-tubes.com/index.html I don't know if external links are allowed here so if it disappears I will know not to post another one. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted June 7, 2015 Super User Posted June 7, 2015 Board member "Frog Turds" is a "toon" kinda guy and has made quite a few mods to his boat. If he doesn't show up on this thread in a day or so you might send him a PM. Quote
CampingBass Posted June 7, 2015 Author Posted June 7, 2015 Cool - thank you guys and the link worked;) Quote
CampingBass Posted June 22, 2015 Author Posted June 22, 2015 For anyone who is looking for ideas here is a few pics of the route I am going. I first tried bending 3/4 inch conduit to make a "U" that would slide into the footrest mounts, the fit wasn't as snug as I wanted so ended up going with wood and it looks horrible but looks pretty ugly haha! pulled out two bass Saturday morning and really glad I discovered these inflatables! Plain First test Tightened things up Video of first layout - after swapping zip ties for U bolts I don't need to keep my feet up! http://vid1156.photobucket.com/albums/p575/HappyCamper7474/20150613_150052_zpsfimv0hs3.mp4 Quote

I also like to bring in fish between the pontoons and that motor would be in the way. Quote
Dogmatic Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 I have a heavily modified CA Colorado, rear mounted trolling motor, pedstal seat with a swivel, pretty happy with it, but then I saw a YouTube video with a front mount mod. and I'm considering making the change, although I too like bringing the fish in between the toons.https://youtu.be/PS_Gadd7MRg https://youtu.be/q7KcsWoofa0 https://youtu.be/eYfr0th-rSE https://youtu.be/S3wjNM1ptBc My 'toon(not fully rigged) I also highly recommend a Bullnose rudder, really helps with steering and maneuverability Quote
CampingBass Posted June 30, 2015 Author Posted June 30, 2015 I saw those rudders at cabelas bargain cave not too long ago and was tempted - Ive been using the paddles to steer and it feels pretty comfortable for now. What do you guys load up in the back? I don't think I'd be able to access much while on the water without a seat that spins I have a mk 55 lb tm I could mount in back but not sure I want to deal with the extra weight and massive battery. I am very happy I went this route over a yak though, just an awesome feel to fish from Dogmatic - Cup holders and a rod rack are on the list now, thank you for the pic - anything else you are glad you added? Seat pedestal, swivel, skegs, fishfinder, standing platform are additions I cant live w/o. now. I have my tackle, and battery(ies) stowed in back. Quote

Does the raised seat affect rowing at all? I'm playing with different pvc ideas for the fishfinder - ditched the trolling motor for now too. Quote

Yes, raised seat does affect rowing, I got longer oars, and with my TM, I don't row much anymore. I have one of those large cylindrical seat pedestals with square plates, but if I had to do it again, I'd get a post and base plate, like that is used on boats(just alot lighter, and adjustable, and swivels w/o the need for a heavy swivel plate). For the standing platform, I used a piece of diamond plate (found it, and it happened to be the perfect size) attached 4 pieces of chain(8"), and 4 four hooks to my frame in front of my seat. I used chain so I can raise it out of the water when I'm motoring.(I'll get a pic posted) YouTube has some vids on this too. Some guys use sliding shelf rails attached to the frame below the seat, so the platform slides back out of the way,(A future project). I frequent kayak DIY sites because there are a lot of good ideas and products for yaks that can be used on multiple types of watercraft, like transducer arms made out of pvc, and Yak Attack makes a really nice arm (I put them on my canoe and yak). BTW I wouldn't fish w/o my motor now, just too slow with the oars. Quote

Maybe I'll hold off on mounting it till I figure out the whole layout. I'll be researching the sliding platform too - that would really change the feel. the trolling motor in the pic was part of the deal on CL but I have a 55lb one as well that just needs a battery. It is just so heavy I feel like it's too much combined with a battery - I'm about 185 or so. Maybe I'm just being naive about how much these can handle? I'd really appreciate pics sometime if its not a hassle for you. Quote
Dogmatic Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Working on the pics...I haven't used it in awhile so it's packed away. The 'toon you have has a weight capacity between 275#-300#, so "going light" is important, but I would never give up my TM (55# thrust also). Purchase wheelchair batteries(12v35ah) smaller/lighter, and will work for your application. Balance is important. So if you go with a rear mount TM and battery, move your frame as far forward on the toons as it will go, and then move seat and footrest as far as they go. This will help your boat to float level, and not drag ass, especially since your cargo deck is so far back. (I would definitely consider a front trolling motor mod with your boat.) Quote
Dogmatic Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 This is the pedestal kit I was talking about. Btwn $50-$60 Quote
