O.K. you have roughly $200 to spend on a new reel. You are going to get a Daiwa, I say again you are going to get a DAIWA. which of the following would you choose and why.

1-Alphas SV

2-T3 1016

3-new model Zillion

4-Used Alphas Ito ai

5-Used TD-Z type R or R+

6-other

all can be had around this price

If you can locate a R+ go for it.  Second choice would be an alphas sv.  Third, original zillion and depending on your application a used px type r.

I am guessing by new you mean new to you and not NIB. Some reels you have listed would be nearly impossible to find for that price. To answer your ? I would get the Alphas SV or the TDZ Type R or R+. I would substitute the T3 MX over the 1016. Not sure what you want the reel for? Plastics, jigs, hardbaits, resistance blade baits, etc. Also not sure how you value reel weight, physical size of reel, casting distance, gear ratio, smoothness, frame material, and tuning options. Lots of good choices with only minor differences separating them.

1-Alphas SV. It is one great reel.

There is an R+ on EBay right now for $189 that has me interested. It really what got this topic started. I was planing on getting the Alphas SV and saw the R+ and decided to throw the question out there.

You can buy an alphas sv any time and I suggest you do, but the R+ is a special reel that is getting harder to find.

The ito is a tiny reel.  Very light.  To be honest, I haven't used it in several years.  Not because I don't like the reel, tho.  The finish is something you have to be very careful about.  I've heard of the plastic side plate cracking.  Mine is like new.  It was the first reel I tried a light lure on, and my capabilities weren't up to the challenge at that time.  Need to try it again as I've had a lot more practice since then.

Unlike some, I like the covers on the T3 1016, but think the MX is a better looking reel and have an idea its finish will be tougher.  The new Zillion is supposed to be an slightly upgraded Tatula from what I have read.  Given my choice of Zillions, I would take the 50th Anniversary every time.

My TD-Z Type R hasn't seen much use as I am not a fan of the flipping switch.  However, it is an excellent performing reel.  This post reminds me I need to take it for a spin again.  :teeth:

Of the other 2 listed, my first choice (sight unseen) would be the SV based on what I have read about how well the spool behaves.  I am not an expert caster so a wild spool is hard for me to handle.  I don't know it the R+ spool falls in the category of the Steez 103 or not, but if it does it would be a reel I would be using only under favorable conditions.  However, being something of a reel fanatic, I would probably do as masterbass suggested.....buy the R+ while I could and pick up the SV at a later date.

One thing I am 100% positive of is....................you never can have too many reels.  :eyebrows:

The tdz r+ is not as wild as the steez in my hands even though they both share r+ tuning. I'd rather have an alphas sv over the alphas ito for sure.

Just got my first Alphas sv yesterday, and I'm already ordering another. It is one sweet little reel with performance well beyond its price point.

I hear from folks the alphas SV is the bees knees, my plan was to always buy one but I bought another reel instead. This is my next reel for sure.

Out of those probably the alpha sv because I need a lightweight lure rod.

I have the zillion, I enjoy it. Casting is smooth and definitely goes the distance they have been bragging about.

Truth be told, the desicion was between the Alphas SV and the R+ all along. I tossed the other reels in to see a few more opinions. I still haven't made up my mind which it will be and know I'm thinking about getting a regular used TD-Z 103 and putting a 1016 spool in it. I have a T3 1016 and that spool is really quite something. Sometimes I really can drive myself crazy with these live and death decitions

I prefer the r+ spool over the 1016. 1016 is a fantastic spool but its almost "too controlled" if that makes sense. I still like it more than a lot of stock spools on the market however. All my tdz r+ are left hand and ive been fortunate enough to source the 7:1 gear set for them which personally makes it the perfect reel. When i need a new set up, the alphas is on top of my list...unless a tdz r+ pops up. They just dont come along often enough to pass them up. Alphas isnt going anywhere being new. Im still in the long process of switching all my reels to the zillion/ td-z frame.
