beagle 25 Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 Hello this may be a dumb question. How is the best way to remove a snell knot from a flipping hook when you change baits. I have probably 50 hooks that have line on them and can't figure out a way to clean them up. I tried to tie over the old knot but didn't like the way it cinched up. I've tried pliers and cutters of all types and I really don't want want to throw all those hooks away. Quote
Quebecbassangler Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 What type of line is on them,if braided is on any and there is enough to slice into a serrated edge knife or scissors will do,if your onto fluro or mono you can try a razor blade to gently cut it away,if you have nothing plastic on your hooks (you said they were flipping) and it is just the knot and hook use a lighter just over the knot/line it will take it off in a second,if you do have some plastic steer clear of the flame and try the above, sometimes using pliers to loosen it will end up having the opposite effect cinching it tighter giving less room to work with Good luck John Quote
Super User Darren. Posted June 5, 2015 Super User Posted June 5, 2015 I've taken a knife blade to the hook shank and "carve" up gently to slice away the line... Quote
Jon G Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 Sharp Knife or hold it under a lighter for half a seconds or so Quote
beagle 25 Posted June 5, 2015 Author Posted June 5, 2015 Thanks guys I appreciate the responses Quote
KayakBasser Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 Ive tried cutting them off also, but it leaves behind a rough surface that i believe to damage the line(just my opinion), my favorite way is to just burn the knot off with a lighter, it may or may not weaken your hook but the only hooks I tie snell knots on are my flipping hooks so their so thick weakening is not a problem.Hope this helps. beagle 25 Posted June 5, 2015 Author Posted June 5, 2015 Tried the lighter trick works like a charm thank you for the advice Quote
Quebecbassangler Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 The lighter does do the trick and if you only run it over the cut off or knot edge for a second it should not weaken the hook and if any knot or line is left over after running the flame over it,it will be weak enough to just pull off Quote
Super User J Francho Posted June 5, 2015 Super User Posted June 5, 2015 Push the main line back in the knot to creat some slack. From there, undo the knot or nip at it with scissors. Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted June 5, 2015 Super User Posted June 5, 2015 A zippo weakening a hook from a couple seconds of heat? No. Quote
hatrix Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 There should be a line that cuts across the wraps on the hook from where you go down into the loop you make before you wrap the shank. Just take another hook and get under that piece of line and pull it out. It will just unravel right off the shank now. I had the same problem before and also asked the same question and got all the same answers. This is the best and super easy to do. Quote
hatrix Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 I don't know how everyone ties a snell but if you do it the same as I do. Make a loop then wrap the shank and through the loop to tighten it. Just get a hook under the line running across the wraps that goes through the loop and pull it out and it will come right off. Lighters and cutting it off are a pita and can mark up the shank or melt the keeper. Quote
PitchinJigz Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 I just take another hook and push the point under the wraps and pull them out. Then you can cut them or just keeping unraveling it. Quote
Kevin22 Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 Lighter, just be sure to not hit the plastic keeper if it is not metal. Only takes a half second of heat, will not effect the hook. Quote
pbizzle Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 I never have a lighter with me so I just use fingernail clippers (AKA Line Cutters according to Rapala for $5 more). Works fine. Quote
