Hey all,

I recently looked through that old incidentals thread I started a while back. Well, today I want to know your stories of stuff you've caught while fishing that weren't fish. Or any other type of living thing, for that matter. Basically any type of thing you've snagged that wasn't alive. This thread should get interesting quick...

I remember fishing a little lake I was very familiar with for catfish (small channel cats and bullheads).  There were boulders and flat rocks for sitting on the shore so I cast my slip sinker rig out and sat down to wait.  I had chummed the area so expected a fairly early hit....after about 30 minutes I decided to cast out a bit further.

But when I tried to reel it back in I felt pressure and instinctively set the hook.  In the end, I landed a "hand fishing rig" with about 50 pound test line draped on my hook and logs on either side :)

A while back when I first started getting serious about fishing, I remember I felt a tap fishing a 5" senko. Well, I set the hook and an epic battle began. After a lot of wthecks I landed a solid fist sized piece of coral.

The hook was done but I got my senko back!

I snagged a dead salmon once. It stunk like a sack of rotting flesh (because that's what is was.)

I never hooked it, but I once found someone's old Droid in the pond. It was just kind of sitting on the bottom, so I picked it up, got it home, put it in a bag of rice, and it ended up working... for about 45 minutes.

I have done the same thing many times, but the best one was when a 30lb+ dead chinook was slowly floating down river. Somehow, and I have no idea how, I hooked it inside the mouth while I was drifting. And yes, I "landed" it too.

I caught a sleeping bag on a jigging spoon once. I unhooked it and released it quickly before I found out if there was anyone still inside it or not.

I caught a dead rock bass dragging a tube that was gross. I also managed (thankfully) to avoid snagging a prophylactic that was floating downstream.

Earlier this year I caught a rusty kids spin-casting rod. It was all covered with Algae and weeds and stuff. I didn't keep it. I have also caught mussels and turtles and a few other things.

Are you taking that beauty (202) to Mexico with you.

You better believe it !

Of course, I'll need to add some rod guides first as the originals seem to have rotted off.

I think it would fish better with the guides.

Can't wait to heave a Huddleston . . .

When I was a little kid I went fishing with my dad and hooked a wool sock. He told everyone it was a sockeye...

Another time I was using a spinner in a stream and somehow hooked a flat rock... In the middle! It was a little disc shaped rock that was about 4in. in diameter. When I reeled it in against the current I thought I caught a really lazy monster trout!

My parents let my deadbeat ex-monster-in-law use their lake house for a short time while after being evicted. She somehow managed to throw my Zebco 33 combo so far off the dock I couldn't find it swimming. Accident, right??? Well, years later after divorcing her daughter, I snagged it and reeled it in/ I tossed it in the garbage this time.

No one ever believed this one at the time because I was pretty young when it happened. I was catfishing on a rainy day, not getting any bites. Then the rod doubles in the holder. I start reeling but the fish is taking a lot of drag. Then suddenly the line goes limp, but I can still feel a little weight on it. I reel it up and it's just the head of a small dead catfish with the hook in its mouth. Ih had been dead a while because the eyes were glassy. All I can figure is it was a big cat with the body of the small one in his mouth when it bit my bait. I only managed to get the hook into the dead fish and the body broke off.

I keep thinking of things and coming back to this thread. I hooked someone's catfish basket and it came up to the boat (Stren 14# mono used to be good stuff). It had two big cats and a softshell dead turtle in it. They thrashed around and threw dead turtle all over my dad and me. We had to cut the fishing trip short and go back to get showers.

What sticks out in my mind was catching an Anchor/Grappling Hook when I was a kid. I kept it for a while and used it for all sorts of things. More recently, on Wednesday my friend catch a branch that had several lures on it. Not quite as good as the Shad we caught but we couldn't complain.

One time the lake was in flood stage and muddy . I was desperate to catch anything . I located a school of white bass off a boat ramp . Fishing jigging spoons I also caught a dipnet , spinning rod and reel combo and two wrist watches . A Seiko and a Timex. The Timex was still working and I wore it for a year or so .
