This year, the river seems to be in a funk so far.  Last year, all of May and the first half of June yielded giant smallmouth, but so far, all my bites seem so random and the sizes have been mostly just average.  I only fish from shore, so I'm not really sure where the bass have been holding lately. It may have to due with the crazy temperatures recently, a few weeks ago it was in the 80's and then last week was in the 50's

Anyone who fishes Lake Erie near Buffalo or the Upper Niagara can you chime in a post about your experience with the smallmouth this year? I think most are in the process with spawning because I've seen a few on beds, but im not entirely sure of the water temperature right now either.

I'm just not sure on what to use currently or where to try. Any recommendations?

Couldn't help ya as far as fishing from shore, but most of the bass have spawned and moved off of beds, anybody else in the area that says otherwise hasn't fished enough. I was catching 5+ lbers off of beds up until last week in the lake and river, and they have moved off of all of my prespawn spots into deeper water. Soft plastic jerkbaits, small crankbaits, and spinnerbaits while the bait is still in the river. I would say a tube but most of the bass I'm catching aren't feeding much off of the bottom.

I was thinking of taking the mountain bike down to the waterfront and fishing the old ship canals by Templeton Landing and the small boat harbor..
