I wish there were snakehead here. I might even stop fishing for bass altogether.

Given a nice hard rain here in MD and then you can hear them in the gutters of your house...they are the best gamefish to have graced MD. We call them "Potomac Pike"

But back to bowfin baits.. spinner baits and swim jig with a trailing blade. White and silver for both.

Just caught my first ever and it was a blast, now I’m here trying to figure out how to do it again lol. Caught at least a ten pounder on a light lime green spinner bait.

Caught them on spinnerbaits and Senkos while not trying to catch them.

Tried to catch them on one of the Rappahannock River creeks and they would not touch anything we threw.

Go figure.

That looks like a bowfin, but what's up with its mouth and color. Its lighter colored than the ones I've caught. And like you said, you wouldn't lip one either.

You got me . This fish appears to be toothless .

I am pretty sure that is a bowfin and maybe he is lipping it between the teeth?  I know i wouldn't even try to do that but either way, if it was a 10lb bowfin no way would he be lipping it.

Agreed.  But I enlarged the pic 300% and could not find what looked like a tooth.

I have caught them on anything and everything if they are around in numbers and they are in some spots I fish.   The biggest thing is being able to get a hook in them.  Their mouth has very few sports you can set the hook in and have it hold.

On a side note, a hook with the tennis ball like fuzz or just the ball of fuzz will catch Gar pretty consistently since their teeth get caught up in the fuzz

I've caught numerous bowfin (mud fish) in the Okefenokee Swamp on a fire tiger Rooster tail.  A fast retrieve with this catches pickerel and a slower retrieve catches the bowfin.  They are awesome fighters and underrated.

Their fight certainly isn't underrated, they are famous for being powerful.

This one ate a vibrating jig ~

Only one I've ever caught.

Cool fish and I may look to get on a few more when the time is right.
