BassResource.com Advertiser FD. Posted June 3, 2015 BassResource.com Advertiser Posted June 3, 2015 Billy is the BAD dude. He really thinks outside the box with his techniques. He inspires so many and costs us LOTS of money. He is the reason this is in my basement right now! Using a block on the ban saw to use it like a table saw was a pretty awesome trick. Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted June 3, 2015 Author Super User Posted June 3, 2015 Missed a couple steps steps in the process the other night. Boring the block. Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted June 3, 2015 Author Super User Posted June 3, 2015 I had to quit tonight. I broke too much stuff in the shop. After I bored the foregrip, I needed to change chucks to turn the grip. The chuck was stuck on the threaded adapter. In my attempt to get the chuck off, I managed to mess up the chuck, those jaws, the threaded adapter and my 1/2" x18" mandrel. To say it was an expensive night is an understatement. Fortunately the insert was good enough to put my other chuck on to turn the grip. Here's what I ended up doing after my little mishap. Rough turned. Finished grip. All glued up. Tomorrow, I'll chuck it up in the power wrapper and finish shaping the grips. I'll blend the rear grip into the butt cap and taper it to the back of the reel seat. I'll also taper the foregrip to the front of the reel seat. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted June 3, 2015 Super User Posted June 3, 2015 Amazing. I REALLY like this grip! Sucks you broke a bunch of stuff, but this grip work is KILLER! Jeff Quote
Dypsis Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 Scott - that is one sweet looking rod. Those grips are simply awesome. Quote

He has one of my creatitons unwrapped. It's his 7wt Sage. Wait til you see what I have in mind for his 11wt. I hope it all works out and doesn't end up in the drawer of 'grips I'm not proud of'! 1 Quote

Canyon explorer Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 Started messing around with the new band saw Friday night. This is the rear grip for a 12' surf rod I'm building for a friend. as much fun as watching glue dry! Once it's on the blank, I'll do a final sanding to taper it down to the reelseat and blend it in to the butt cap. Outstanding work. If you can wrap as well as you can create, I would love to see your work. Quote
Lucky Craft Man Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 Dwight, Although Steve has claimed he wouldn't put Rod Wrap on a grip like this - that has yet to be seen. Alright Smartypants, I do love my Rod Wraps, but, as Scott has mentioned, I have not (and will not) wrap my Sage Custom out of respect of Scott's insane talent and workmanship. Putting Rod Wrap on one of his ornate grips is like putting a veil on the Mona Lisa. You just can't cover up art like that and if the grip on this 11 wt is anything like that Sage or the handle in this thread, that will become the second rod I will own wothout a wrap. 3 Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted June 15, 2015 Author Super User Posted June 15, 2015 Just laid down the final coat on project Agent Orange (that's what Jim decided to call it). The rod sock I ordered for it didn't work out, so wifey whipped this up last night. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 The invisible wraps came out nice. Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted June 16, 2015 Author Super User Posted June 16, 2015 The invisible wraps came out nice. Thanks. Totally unintentional. Just a happy accident. I thought they would be darker. Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted June 16, 2015 Author Super User Posted June 16, 2015 White nylon or silk? Neither. It was one of the medium grey shades of prowrap. Before finish. Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted June 16, 2015 Author Super User Posted June 16, 2015 Had I opted to use CP, the wraps would have matched the grip perfectly. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 I like the translucence of threads with no CP but never saw one disappear so completely. Happy accident it was. Quote
BasserJim Posted June 18, 2015 Posted June 18, 2015 You guys only think this looks good in the photos, I don't think I've ever grinned that much picking up a rod from Scott. Thanks buddy, this thing is the cat's meow! Quote

Thanks buddy, this thing is the cat's meow! I agree. I saw this in Scott's shop before Jim picked it up. Just unreal. Great build, Scott! Quote
